Hi,

Last week, I received a mail from someone asking me info on a camera that I want to sell.
Didn't had anything to suspect for, even after the buyer told me that he is from Nigeria, I'm used to buy and sell to many places on Earth.
What set me off was when he said that he already had done the payment to my Paypal account and I should send the item the next day in the morning and send the proof of the postage to the Paypal services. So that was a first.. never any buyer rushed me to send the item on the next day, and asked to send proof to Paypal..
So, I logged on my Paypal to see if the transfer as been done, of course it didn't, so I inspected the "Paypal" mails that got into the spam folder, that was also a first never had a Paypal mail dumped in spam folder.
Then I googled the mail address of the said "Paypal" mail - [email protected]® <[email protected]> that gived the confirmation of my doubts, it was a scam, the guy want my camera for free.
That's when I started to think how to make him waste some more time with me, I told him that the post office was on strike and I couldn't send the that day and after that it was weekend so I could only send on the Monday. He reply that I could send it on the Saturday (he is in a hurry), I told him that on my country the post offices are closed all weekend.
Now I'm thinking on digitizing a fake postal order with a false home address and sending it to him, any suggestions on what else could I be doing to waste some more of his time?

If he has information that in any way ties to you, even if it is just the email address for your PayPal account -- drop him. There are plenty of scammers out there that you can bait once you set up a completely fake email address, pick a letter out of surplus, and have at it.

Where was the item listed for sale?

Drop him, drop him now and drop him forever.

Why? Because he has information that links back to your real life identity. You don't want that.

Please take some time to read the rules and guidelines, especially that on safe baiting here here.

Don't ever compromise your safety when dealing with these guys, they are seriously antisocial criminals who network quickly and may as well be next door to you. Craigslist scammers are hard to bait anyway. Try a Late Dictator or Dying Widow, they can be much more fun.

same problem, really - he knows where you live, or could find out without too much difficulty.

Now you have posted you can sign up for a mentor, who will be your guiding light for getting started in baiting. Does that sound like a plan?

Ignore all further messages he sends to your RL address.

If you'd like to bait him, create a new email address and character, located at a postal address that doesn't exist, and answer him from the new account as if he had answered your character's ad for an item that doesn't exist (something like a Nikon Tapetum 256).

You may want to post the emails and email address of the scammer at Scamwarners.

Can't remember if this is mentioned in FAQs but here we go anyway:

Since scammer has had contact with you they will consider you at least somewhat gullible. When that happens your email address becomes a commodity. So be prepared to for those other scam messages you are about to receive.

I'm not suggesting that you might fall for them but this is important information if you inted to start baiting. Your own email can be your catcher account.

Leka's right victims who respond frequently have their email addresses passed around between scammers. If you have your filters set on high , it will all go to spam. But don't be surprised if you see recovery scams-offers torecover what you have "allegedly lost-for an up-front fee.

As you've heard several times, please don't respond from your account. Just cut and paste the email without the address", and respond from you're new fake account.

I am in the midst of my first baitings. Please listen to the others and get a Mentor... I have and it is so good to keep you right.

I have two fake email addresses with nothing to tie to me. Even if you don't continue with this one...all is not lost. You'll get more and set yourself up properly and then enjoy.

I've been ignoring him since my last msg on Friday, he already sent me 4 msg urging me to not forget to post the item and started to ask why don't I answer his mails Smile

DD, you may want to set a filter to automatically send his incoming emails to your "deleted" box so you don't accidentally reply to him, or feel tempted to reply at a later date. View him as a relatively inexpensive first lesson in baiting, read the stickies, grab a mentor, and be prepared to have some very SAFE fun from another ID! Smile

^^^ A signature scammer behavior: desperation.

Keeping in mind that there are many cameras in the world, this guy is intent on sending repeated emails to get yours. A genuine byer would simply move on. This trait is one of the things that can help a bait along. You do not need to provide extravogant means to keep them hooked. A response every other day will keep many a lad chomping. The idea is you can learn to waste lots of their time and get their hopes up while expending very little effort.

I just got three emails from a lad:

In the Chemical World massbait (2011-10/11), the lad sent up to twelve emails a day to each character, often saying things like "ANSWER ONLY THIS EMAIL ONLY".
