No penguins and no fruit, because I'm lazy and can't be bothered to learn how to navigate around either.

Windows OS only. What brand, hardware and software (av, anti mal/spy etc)?

I REQURE UR URGENT ASSISTANTS PLS.

*Must have CD/DVD so I can load Photochop.

EDIT- Win8 makes Linux look worth learning... Laughing

I've got an Asus that I've been using for a couple of years, spec wise, it is similar to this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i3-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-black/7498211.p, but I don't have to put up with Win 8.

AV and Malware, I use the free version of Avast! and Malwarebytes.

If you've not got a version of MS Office to install then OpenOffice or LibraOffice are both compatible and have similar GUIs to the pre-ribbon version of MS Office.

Yeah, I like avast and malware bytes, used them religiously in the past. It's been about 2 years since I've used anything but an iPhone/iPad to access the internet and I just wanted to make sure that those two are still the latest and greatest av/am.

I'm a Dell fan-with CD/ROM drive. It's more expensive than $500 but I wanted something as close to a desk top as I could get. I hate Windows 8 but learned to put up with it. Fortunately, Skype stopped supporting the 8 deaktop app which was half-assed at best. Conventional skype works just fine.

I also use the free version of Superantispyware. It picks up quite a bit that Malwarebytes doesn't. These days I think it works best if I run Anti Spyware first then Malwarebytes, then Avast for a full cleanout. I occasionally use CCleaner too. Biggest thing is that after running it I have to Password into EVERYTHING!

I have a two-year old model of this without the touchscreen

It works well. I use Komodo free and Malwarebytes. Fortunately for me, I had a friend finishing up their doctorate and used their University account to add Office and a ton of Adobe products for a huge discount.

The only time I have noticed a problem is if I have two RAM heavy apps going at the same time.

You can go into Best Buy (or some large retailer like that) and find a decent one for $350-$400. Or look for a used one at a pawn shop for a little more bang for your buck.

I've decided the machine will be a Lenovo G50, but as I've been in a South American prison for the past couple of years (bi-gal has 1337 detective 5k1llz), I was not aware of the atrocity that is Windows 8. No way I'm looking forward to dealing with that crap.

Buy a Win7 disc, or go kicking and screaming into a Linux OS?

/\/\/\ Looks like M$ tried to make a PC into an oversized cellphone. Doesn't look like it's very user friendly unless all you want to do with it is get on twitter, Facebook or Pinterest.

Does it even have a the desktop view?

When my XP desktop died a few months ago I went to my local computer store (they load my programs and clean off the crap that comes with every new machine so it's well worth it). The owner very emphatically told me to avoid Windows 8 like the plague. He sold me new hp with Windows 7, works for me.

If you can beg, borrow or bribe someone to install Win 7, definitely do it. Even M$ recognized that the next edition was an epic fail and are tinkering with it like crazy.

Well, I blew the budget on my laptop, but I found one loaded with Win7, and it should garner some serious brownie points with Ghost.

I bought an Alienware 14. Embarassed

Quite frankly, I believe the one that Klassvaak posted would be a better option than anything with Win8. Laughing
