My parents and apparently thousands of others have been targeted by an individual claiming to be from the IRS. All calls are originating from 585-633-1814. My elderly parents were threatened with jail time unless they paid this go, so they were obviously extremely upset. They are actively targeting people across the US, so hopefully someone will have some luck fighting this scam. I'm new to this board, so hopefully I'm going about this the right way. See below to read about other peoples encounters with them.

^^It's phone calls....not emails.
@sharp2296: I'd suggest that you contact our sister site, scamwarners.com
I'm not sure there is much we can do there at Eater.
And it's possible that the phone number has been spoofed. |

Our sister site scamwarners.com is definitely the place to post this. This sort of scam is outside our scope.
Googling the phone number brings up a lot of hits, including one on the Federal Trade Commission website. |

Question for the mods and more experienced baiters:
If this is really a scam and all we have is a phone number, is it prudent to 'use' that number in other baits (ie when lads ask for your #)?
Just curious if that's OK or a no-no. |

There's a large nuber of complaints not just on the whycall.me link the OP posted, but on WhitePages.
Whit pages says the number is a "Ymax Oration Landline", which I think is a VoIP provider, but not 100% certain.
The only thing I can't see a comment on is whether anyone has actually called the number or if it is all done as outbound calls. |

On an individual basis, it will probably blow your bait, as the scammer will ring up asking for your character and end up talking to some call-center in India.
But I wouldn't see a problem with it being mass-mailed or added to something like Big X's phone chain so that hundreds of lads all end up calling it - burn up lad phone credit and block the IRS scammers phones up, sounds like a win-win. |
