Back in the day, 1970's, we Brits used to get wrestling for an hour between 4 and 5 p.m
on a saturday prior to the football (round ball thats kicked) results.

We had stars such as

Mick Mcmanus - aka The man you love to hate

Giant Haystacks - 6ft 11in., weighing 48 stone (670 pounds, 300kg)

Big Daddy - Real name Shirley Crabtree (yep a 6ft 2in, 26+ stone (375 pounds, 170kg) bloke whos real name was Shirley)

Mark 'Rollerball' Rocco

and my particular favourite at the time

I still have fond memories of my mum screaming at the t.v. egging on her favourites and no matter how many times you told her
she would not believe that it was mostly playacting and the results fixed.

A Couple of years a ago a Friend of mine found this in a junk store and bought for me as a joke:

He didn't know that my Father actually took me to that particular show. It must have been late 70s but I can't really remember the exact date; just that he sprang for ringside seats ($6) and the Lady Wrestlers weren't actually 'Beautiful' and there were no Midgets (Fabulous or otherwise). We were treated to Gentle Ben the Wrestling Bear though.

Just wanted to say I am loving this thread. Growing up in Indiana we were right in the heart of WWA country, my grandfather was an old drinking buddy of Dick the Bruiser (or so he always said... mostly he hung around with the horse racing, boxing and country music crowds). And my grandmother was glued to the wrestling on TV, spitting and cursing at all the heels.... although she swore she hated all that violent stuff.

I don't know how many WWA and spin-off shows we went to around the late 70s, early 80s, as they travelled around the north central Indiana small venue circuit (always seemed to be in National Guard armories for some reason). Bruiser was one hell of a showman, that's for sure.... and it was just amazing to see those guys putting in a real effort even for a miserable hall with barely 30 people present (shame on you Peru Indiana).

During the early 80s when "The Great Wojo" came into the fold there was always at least one opportunity for "fans from the stands" to come into the ring, get a chance at a cash prize and (sometimes) as a tryout for the big time. Wojo had a hugely successful amateur wrestling background and destroyed those guys (including my uncle on one occasion, who thought a bit of street fighting gave him a chance).

It was really disappointing, though, for me as a young wrassling fan who bought in 100% into the stories of heels, faces and other parts of the show, to go into a local restaurant and see heels chowing down side by side with their sworn enemies. At the time I figured it was the same thing as seeing the local preacher in a bar..... just something that couldn't be explained.

There was never a shortage of "gay" heels working the local circuit and once I became a little more aware of how things worked, it became even more fun watching them try to keep a straight face as they worked the crowd into a howling rage.

Leapin' Lanny Poffo!! (Later "The Genius"). He used to write little insulting poems about his opponents onto frisbees, read them off in the ring and then toss them into the crowd. My brother caught one of them & still has it above his desk.

^I knew someone would comment on that but I really wanted the Metric Set! I'm still using the Pool Cue she gave me and holding on to the fond memories of watching the WWF at Copps Colosseum in Hamilton (mid/late Eighties) on her Dime. The Huckster took on Butch Reed ( with Slick by his side), Hacksaw Jim Duggan and a whole bunch of others.

The Highlight was 'The Hitman' having to explain why his partner 'The Anvil' couldn't make it - and I'm remembering this from long ago but it was sorta like: 'The Anvil couldn't make it because the thought of going to Canada made him Puke...' I kid you not! Brett and Jim were Mid-Carders in those days.

Boy did they get bounced around a lot. For the most part they were whooping boys for the main attractions.

My son had the good fortune to run into Lou Albano at a beach front in Maryland. He told me Lou was just the same in real life as he was performing as a manager for the WWWF. With the signature rubber band in his chin whiskers, pierced cheeks, loud fast talker and just a lot of fun to be with.

ETA: It wasn't Maryland it was Delaware.

I only know of this one from my Father saying (what I thought) Sweet Daddy Sicky. A few people I know have seen him play and he is supposedly good. It all might depend upon how many chemicals one has in his/her system though.
