I am new, so please forgive any silly questions I might ask now or in the near future...
When a lad sends you a jpeg or other attachment, is there a way to check it first to see if it's safe to open and store on your computer?

A jpeg or png file should not be a problem, as there is no executable code in it. A PostScript or PDF is different, as PS is a complete programming language. It's unlikely that a lad will send you a virus intentionally, but he could send one by accident. I suggest that you do not open such files on a Windows box and do not open them as root. |

If you us Gmail, you can use the "View" functionality to safely look at attachments such as pics and documents. |

It's rare for lads to use technical attacks, they usually stick to social engineering and manipulation. With that said we have seen a few smart Alecs trying it on with malware of various sorts so best to be on your guard. Keep your antivirus system fed and be careful with attachments. |
