That is just...edited for content.
These folks need power asap in the affected areas. Winter is a comin'! Rebuilding cant be done without power. Union or no those lines have to be repaired.
Haven't been to the bad spots yet but it may happen soon. |

^^ About 1,000 electrical utilities workers from Alabama power companies and co-ops were sent away from New Jersey because they were not union.
There was a Chinese restaurant in NY which had prepared food off site (where there was power) brought it to their restaurant, using the sterno to keep things hot as is done in many buffets. They were using candles to light the restaurant yet a NY health inspector told them they had to close down. Geesh, they were just trying to help feed people.
If a health inspector tried that down here..............well, let's just say he would be tossed on his ear. |

70mph winds. Extensive flooding with towns and cities underwater (half the county I live in is swimming). More to come over the next few days.
Is this New York?
Nope. It's the UK at the moment.

Like I said in my post a few further up - we get this shit all the time and it doesn't even make the headline news over here!!! |

Winds of 70 mph, in the minimum, are "tropical storms" on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale. 71 or 74 is a Cat 1.
You are right, we don't here about the storms of that magnitude in the UK. If those of you in the path of this "weather" stay safe and evacuate if they recommend that. Might be a good idea even if they don't tell you to evacuate.
Stay safe. |

Nobody ever evacuates because of wind over here, some may do if they are flooded out, but as SOOI says winds of that speed are becoming the norm.
Up where I live if the wind reaches over 60mph the only concession we make is to take our washing in from the line |

It was 85mph in some parts of the country on Thursday.
The only evacuating from flooding is done after the water has come in through your front door. And then, normally, you evacuate from the ground floor to upstairs.
Just got a photo in an email from an old neighbour - one of the places I used to live at is flooded out again. I hope the new owners don't have to put up with the same shit from their insurers as I did. |

Living 200m asl has it's advantages. Having said that, we've had to replace the back fence 3 times in the last few years due to high winds. Finally had the wood replaced with concrete panels. Doesn't look so good, but stops the bins from ending up on the back field. |

Cougar lives in an area which is prone to flooding, she just hopes their flood defences hold.
Seems over all parts of the islands the ground is saturated, the rain can't soak away and just floods the land.
Just think earlier in the year the farmers and growers were praying for rain, because of the drought.
One of my earlier posts i mentioned that my late mother use to say what New York got we got 6 weeks later, forcasters said we would not get Hurricane Sandy, i think we have it now, with storms coming from the south today and from the west again next week. |

We get in the habit of evacuating because "you never know"
Some people who rode out Hurricane Camille (Cat 3) decided to stay put for Katrina. Katrina came ashore as a Cat 1 as did Issac recently, but Katrina was far worse than Issac. Camille came ashore as a Cat 3 but Katrina (Cat 1) was far worse.
It also depends which "side" of the hurricane you are on. In computer modeling the "right" (east) side is the worst side.
One thing about 'canes is that you do have advanced warning unlike tornadoes and earthquakes. We just board up the windows and batten down the house and head out with both vehicles loaded with stuff we want to save and with the cats go to a nice hotel |

^^ That was a nasty one. We are fortunate today to have the methods to alert us of nasty storms. I have often thought what it must have been like prior to the weather information we have today. |

I don't remember ever hearing about as much flooding in the UK as we have now. My sympathies to anyone affected.
It's nearly a year since Hurricane Bawbag hit Scotland, we were well warned though, my daughter's Uni exams were cancelled that day, some schools closed etc

I'm in Coney Island, Zone A. I didn't evacuate but I definitely moved my car, good thing I did was 8-10 feet of water out here.
The flooding lasted only from about 5pm till 1am, but it messed up this side of Brooklyn pretty bad. Still not fully back to normal here, destroyed buildings, plenty of flooded cars still in the streets. Then we had this whole gas shortage... Not very much fun.
Luna Park is as their saying structurally undamaged but all electronics are messed up. |

I read that they have been asking residents to call FEMA or sign up online.............................. how does one do that without electricity or internet providers working............and how do you charge your cell phone without electricity.
This is much worse than Katrina IMHO. We were hot and sweaty not cold and freezing with winter approaching. |
