Hey everyone,

First post here. I've been having some fun baiting property rental scam ads on craigslist. My wife replied to one of these a while back, but got wise to the fact that it was a scam fairly quickly. Ever since, while we were apartment hunting, I would notice dozens of them popping up and they started to get on my nerves. So I decided to have some fun.

They're easy to spot -- ridiculously good deals with lots of typos, and when you type the address into Google you find a listing with the property for sale. The scammer has just copied the images and address from the other site and created a listing for the place at a ridiculously low price on craigslist.

Then when you reply, you find out that they are out of the country and unable to show the place, but you can drive by and have a look at the exterior if you want. They are more than willing to accept you as tenants (and family friends, even) as long as you send them a deposit by western union.

Is anyone else familiar with these ads, and have you had any luck baiting them? Should I post my endeavors here? (Some mature content in them).

Hi Doc...Welcome to Eater! We do bait these craigslist lads. However we do not bait with any of our real life information.

I suggest that you drop all contact with them and make up a baiter email account and start baiting anew.

Thanks for the tip, JC. I've been using my "gag" email to contact these guys, and I've been using a character. (Already picked a few things up by lurking here). I'll definitely sign up for a mentor.

Baiting some of the "finds" on CL can be fun. We were looking for a new pickup (well previously owned) and I came across a scammer. Had a bit of fun with him. However, I baited him with one of my fake accounts to bait safe.
