I'm paying a little under $0.20 per kW/h (UK East Anglia) with E.On (probably the most incompetent energy supplier in the world who 2 days ago sent me a bill and then yesterday sent me a mail saying they were going to cut the supply as their meter reader had reported my house was "abandoned).

However I'm making $0.73 per kWh from my solar PV array which generates power I can use and also sell back to them.

So net-net the electricity company end up paying me Laughing

Electricity

MS Power charges:
.75 cent p/day for single phase electric
.75 cent p/day for 3 phase service

1st 650 kwH is 4.524 cents p/khw
next 350 is 5.877 cents p/khw
Over 1,000 is 5.990 cents p/khw

Then there is a change on the above depending on the month of service

Summer is June through Sept inclusive
Shoulder is April, May, Oct, November
Winter rates id December through March, inclusive

We have permanent fees for our outdoor security lighting - $9/mo

We also have to pay "environmental" fees at $4.60/mo

We also have Fuel Recovery Costs (which I have never figured out)

However I cut our bill by $100 by hanging clothes outside rather than use the dryer.

I have some property over in Alabama which does not use any electricity (as it is vacant) and I pay $15/mo for the privilege of having it connected.

However on residential electric service we pay NO sales tax, etc.

Here in the Deep, Deep South:

Ethanol gas is $2.89/gal - regular 87 octane

Non-ethanol (which I use) is $3.19/gal

I'm trying to check my bill on-line but National Grid's site apparently isn't working.

Yesterday I paid $3.41 a gallon for regular unleaded.

$9.88 per gallon just down the road, and 15 miles north north east of here is down to just on $9.36. Electricity is similarley expensive.
I'd consider trading in my car for a horse, but the price of hay 'n' oats is high here too.

@ Morgain. I'm just curious as to what people in other areas pay for electricity. I'm amazed at the wide range of prices. I think I am experiencing a genetic phenomenon, the older I get the more I bitch about prices, and the neighbor kids being on my lawn.

Gas is currently averaging $2.99/gallon

I'm in a rural area only serviced by Entergy, so don't have the option of the lock in rates from competitors. We've been getting sporadic fuel charge refunds over the past year, presumably for overcharges during the past couple of years.

Over the last 6 months or so, the rate has fluxuated from about 9.0 to 11.3 cents per KW/H. Broken out as about 70% Electric and 30% "Fuel Charge".

Right around 30 cents p/kwh. But we're saving the world Rolling Eyes

. Plus we only have to pay about 6 dollars a gallon for petrol/gas, the low octane stuff. Add a dollar or 2 for premium.

Oh and that excludes all the mystery charges and is the discounted rate for signing a fixed term contract. It's pretty awsome here!

Our listed rates go from $0.08 to $0.32/KWh depending upon our monthly usage. When we first moved in we were at the $0.16 price point and I went out and bought over a hundred CFLs. I've been retrofiring LED down lights recently and enjoy them as they fire up instantly and they dim very nicely. This morning's project is to put LEDs under the kitchen overhead cabinets to light up the work surfaces.

As far as gas- we now have two hybrids.

^^I'm working on the LED change out as well. They are pricy so a few at a time is how I am doing it. I hate the way CFLs take forever to warm up. Plus you will probably never have to change out an LED once installed.

Retrofiring~ haha~ The replacements for the PAR (parabolic aluminized reflector) compact fluorescent lights do look like the Saturn 5 rocket motor but are pricey. I wait until the local utility company runs a rebate on them and buy the maximum quantity. I also buy a new LED headlight for my bicycle every year as the light output constantly climbs. I'm on my 6th one and have gone from 35 to 1600 lumens. I've also replaced all the corner marker lights on the cars with LEDs.

Eight years ago I was at birthday party at the house of one of my son's basketball team members. The father was moaning about his $430/month electric bill. I forgot the numbers going around the table but someone asked if I live in a cave when I said we spend less than $50. I had installed solar tubes for lighting, planted trees for shade, had grapes growing in the roof, had premium efficiency motors, installed CFLs,had aquariums for not only the fish but to work as thermal storage and installed Styrofoam on top of the attic insulation. I also had low emissivity windows and doors.

This reminds me- I have to buy some new weatherstripping for the entry door today.

What about the high level of mercury vapor in CFLs? No worries about those? I am hoping for standardization of LEDs, until then make mine incandescent.

^^I completely agree about to concern of Mercury in CFL. You don't want to drop one of those on the floor. Then you have to deal with properly disposing of them as well. To me they are a poor replacement for incandescent light bulbs.

LED is a much better technology and pricing is getting better and better but still a lot more than CFL or incandescent. The light from LED is much better now too more natural and less like something on Star Trek. The fact that they are good for 40-50 years helps but it's still an investment when you think about how many bulbs you have.

You can still cut power consumption by about a third by buying halogen bulbs.

Considering that the traditional incandescent light bulb only converts about 3-4% of the energy it consumes into usable light, you can see how much room for improvement there is. A modern 5W LED lamp can easily replace a 75W incandescent bulb, which has the same effect as suddenly paying 1.2 cents per kWh instead of 18. (For lighting anyway.)

When I saw this I thought it was not having electricity!! Our power has been out nice Friday!! Not sure what we pay per kw

Though gas is $2.96 right now. I have been using a lot for a generator!!
