A week or two ago I discovered several fraudulent charges on my credit card. I quickly contacted my bank, and they are investigating and have issued me a new card. So that deals with it from my end, presumably.
But there's more. Today, I found in my mailbox a USPS envelope returned to me as addressee unknown. I knew I had never sent that, and from the date on it and the fact that several of the false transactions were to USPS, it was clear to me that this was related. Indeed, when I opened it up, it contained a money order for almost a thousand dollars and a note saying "Please respond back for further instruction" to an email address.
This sounds like a form of the check-cashing scam. The person this was addressed to would seem to have been duped by it.
So what do I do with this information? Local police might not be able to do anything with it anyway, and even if they could they typically don't. |

Even if the local police 'can't do anything with it", I would urge you to notify them anyway. Your name and address may be being abused in various ways that you don't even know about yet. It is better that you go to them now and alert them that there might be a problem, as opposed to the police showing up at your front door six months from now......
