It does seem like a nightmare now to fly. The last time I did was before Sep. 11th. God forbid I would need to travel overseas for any reason now.

Here in the US, I'll drive thank you. Drove cross country once before, loved it, will do it again.

Better for the kids too. Both of our boys, 7 and 8, are autistic. If I even tried to get them on a plane, well lets just say we would be in the news!! Shocked

I'm with Bart... if I have to go somewhere, I'm driving. If the goons think they need to grope babies and wheelchair-bound grandmothers, I'll pass.

Although, I may have to fly to the UK soon to sign some papers so that I can have a huge inheritance fund transferred to me, so I may make an exception in that case.

^^^I am supposed to fly to Burkina Faso tomorrow to meet with some bank directors about some unclaimed funds. Normally I would be apprehensive but I will be arrested while trying to board the plane. It's a pity because my contact will come out to the airport at 2 AM to meet me and I won't be there.

Even before 9/11 I would drive to the East Coast on business before I would fly US Air. I happened to be in PA on 9/11/01 and would have been stranded for three days had I not driven.

Do some research (real research, not just watching the MSM). Defining "they" may not be as straight-forward as you think. That's all I'm going to say here.

I cant see its any worse in many ways
my son set off the scanners pre 9/11, internal UK flight, and was patted down, the staff were kind, I wasn't outraged then
My mother when asked if anyone had asked them to carry anything for them cheerfully declared yes she ( POINTS AT ME ) asked me to take this bag, had santa and reindeer on it
Mums was flying down to see sis at Xmas, cue staff scanning bath plug, tattie scones and a haggis
I've travelled with someone who has steel plates instead of collar bone ( motorbike accident) thats fun!

Most of it is being prepared
dont wear Doc Martens going through security unless you want to wait while you untie and take them off, scan them etc
I now don't travel wearing a belt, jewellry, underwired bra, unless I'm prepared to put them in a tray and have it scanned
Put all liquids in hold luggage- dont try and argue with Greek security that suntan oil isnt liquid or honey shouldn't count
The staff at security have a job to do with criteria to follow

and if at check in say say "you're overweight" dont start shouting they're getting personal. Especially if the answer is " I was reffering to your baggage madam"

^^ Maybe that is why I don't have problems flying. I follow the rules/guidelines, and try to make sure I don't have anything on my person or overhead bag that would be problematic and I wear shoes that are not a problem getting off and one.

When I was flying to Europe I had my knitting needs and a small pair of fold-able scissors. At the time knitting needles were still permitted (post -911). The TSA wanted to see the scissors. I explained exactly where they could be found in my carry on. I politely said that when I read the rules I thought there were permitted. The TSA person said yes, they were permitted but she had never seen a pair quite like that. There was a little round hole in the blades where you put the wool to be cut.

Politeness and the rules followed get me through quite quickly.

Now one of my daughters is on some list --the Secondary Security Screening Selection list I think. Once she gets through the red tape and TSA scans, she can fly. The reason she is on that list is she once flew to Ethiopia post 911.

"They" in my post referred to persons that pose an aviation threat, that is, those who would use an aircraft (by force or coercion)for any other act other than lawful, orderly travel. Is that clearer?

I use the Ferries alot to get to Europe. However no matter how many crates of wine, I have in the car, no matter how many cigs I stashed under the seats, the only thing they are interested in, is my 9year old daughter. I have no problem with the authorities asking her questions (Since 2008) as she looks like a English girl who disappeared while on holidays in Portugal.
