I am in the US, so I would have said 4/19/2012, but I think the other way makes more sense... 19/4/2012 meaning the 19th day of the 4th month of the 2012th year...That same clear way of thinking doesn't work with our US based way of writing it...but I'll stick with our US way because I am used to it.

Having spent a few years in and around the Air Force, I can tell you that both are wrong.

19 Apr 2012 -- 19 April 2012 is right. This is the format used in letter headings and in the text.

19 Apr 12 is the correct format to use when filling out forms.

19Apr12 is OK when space is limited. Pre-Y2K it was common on computer formats.

I learned this mostly by doing it wrong, after I had a few correspondence packages kicked back for not using the correct format.

As a bookkeeper, I file everything by month, so it makes sense to list that first.

Obviously everything is also grouped by year, but I'm less likely to be handling a bunch of papers years apart than ones months apart.

(Our way is better. So there.)

USAF - There in lies your problem. I was both Navy wife and Navy employee for many years and did many Navy contracts with the Polaris Missile Legal Team where I learned the correct method.

The "bus drivers" had it all wrong. Wink

Obviously the current system is too complicated. I propose a simpler method. Today shall henceforth be known as C01 (cs); C=Cougartime, year 0, day 1. cs=common sense. Or cougar sense. Comes to the same thing in the end. Mr. Green
