The last time I tried IPtracker it placed me in Canberra, hundreds of miles from me in Melbourne. Intriguingly this time around it was in the same suburb, but in someone else's house and not in the public library a few kays away.

I was tought a very valuable lesson just today by my Eater mentor. He was able to find where I live via my gmail by use of a clever little trick he tought me.

I'm really glad he did it too. The more I read and the more I get involved with this "game" the more I realize that while it might look like a game from the outside, this is serious stuff and keeping ourselves and families safe should always stay in the front of our minds.

That doesn't spoil the fun and excitement for me at all. In fact respect what people are doing here a little bit more.

But yeah... it is great fun and I'm lovin' the stories and enjoying my first "real" bait although it's slow going with my particularly lazy lad.

If somebody is afraid that some lad outthere could track him with his IP he should stay away from baiting...

we bug them, we annoy them and sometimes we even hurt them and cost them money... of course they are going to be mad but from mad to hiring a killer to get rid of you it is a long way... and let's keep it real, the longest way a lad is moving is the way to his money...

I had a lad come to my house after looking up my IP address. Except it wasn't a lad, it was my mother-in-law. And I think she probably didn't use my IP address to get here.

But I'd appreciate it if somebody could help me improve my security so this doesn't happen again.

Probably should be noted again. Lads CANNOT determine where you live (your home address) based off IP information.

Okay, he didn't. At best, he found the city where Poitivine lives. That is a far cry from knowing where someone lives.

Your mentor used an embedded image in an Email to obtain your IP address that's all. You said you are using Gmail. Turn off "enable images" and the embedded image trick will not work. Again though, all he did was ascertain your IP address.

Spypig.com offers the image trick. It's works pretty good. You can choose a picture of a pig or a white 1X1 pixel to embed in the Email.

There are a few other similar services but I don't recall them off hand.

SpyPig also lets you select your own image to embed, so you can embed an image of a WU payslip to encourage the lad to display it.

Everybody should Google their IP address to see whether it is on the Internet or not.

I got quite a surprise a couple of years back when I Googled my IP address. I had signed up for a friend's forum (in Spain). You know, wanting to be a nice guy and all. Lo and behold, there it was on Google. The existence of my IP address connected with that registration.

Well, the overall registration info led to an Internet handle of mine. Googling that led to several other subject matter related web sites that I used that handle on (because I was rather well known in this milieu), including one that if you chose to spend enough time going through my posts, and those of people about me, could have led to a reasonable determination as to who I was/how I could be found.

At a minimum that could have led to annoying private messages on those forums, or posts directed at me by folks who simply wanted to join those forums to do so.

Lesson learned for me. All for trying to help a buddy get his forum off the ground.

that's bad luck

normally, IP addresses change with every login into the internet. there are only a few providers who offer static IPs, aswell as companies normally use static IPs.

so if you are baiting from work, and your workplace has 10 employees, then it's fairly simple to find you.

even if they don't find you, if you pretend to be in the US and you are in France, a lookup of the IP by the lad could burn the bait.

In the USA, at least it has always been my experience, cable ISP service is always a static address.

Anyway, I don't lose sleep over it but I did learn that one lesson about an IP address the hard way.

Oh, and I do pack heat. But I am not so naive as to think it puts up some Fantastic Four Sue Storm force field around me. Anybody can get got.

Back to checking my scam dangles....
