Group D looks rough. As an American I usually only watch the world cup but try to follow every now and then since I am a big sports fan. Think I'll route for merry 'ol England.

Yup that one definitely is the "group of death". D pretty much got the best possible team in every seeding group. Perhaps Spain is a wee bit better than Holland, but Germany and Portugal was clearly the best ones in their seeding groups in my opinion. Sweden got away well i think. England and France are good teams but Sweden have played good against them. Not as tough as group D

Did you watch last year's World Cup final? Holland made a horrible match, they would have gotten half of their team kicked out with a good referee.

I did, and perhaps i was a wee bit wrong. Very Happy

However there were two different styles set against each other. Spain with a fantastic offense versus a hard working defensively skilled (and ugly) Holland. There is no surprise that the game played out the way it did. But i still think that Holland have a great chance against Spain. But as you said, Spain is the better of the two.

But the good news for the Dutch is, as this is the group stages, you can
still qualify from the group even if you do lose to the Germans, providing
you can beat Portugal and Denmark.

I'm fairly happy with England's draw, it could have been a lot worse.
Group A looks very 'lightweight', while Spain and Italy should qualify from
Group C.

^^^Group A is definitely the weakest of the groups but it will not be easy for Czech Rep. (Ranked 33rd) to
qualify as both Russia (12th) and Greece (14th) are currently higher ranked.
Scoring goals will be Czech Rep. big problem, if you look at their qualifying group, Czech Rep. only
scored 12 goals in 8 games (two of which were again Liechtenstein) and both Russia and Greece
are strong defensively and also you will have to take into account Poland having home advantage for
all their games.

The big thing about group D is that you can pretty much leave the positions as is without having to fill in the results.

last World Cup. I could see them winning group D and then its any 1 from
the other 3 to qualify for the knock-out stage.

Group D is very hard to figure out how it ends. I can see all teams end up in first place and i can see all teams end up last.

Ukraine: Player by player the least skilled team in the group, no doubt about it. However they have the home turf and that is often something good in championships. Hosts usually manage to get through the group stage.

Sweden: Defensively skilled team with a style that fits against England (despite the recent loss), good statistics against France and also a team that plays well as the underdog. Just look at when they won the "group of death" in 02 (England, Nigeria, Argentina). But player by player they lack some skills. Only two players are playing regularly for a European top class teams. Most players are from good teams in bad leagues or bad teams in good leagues.

France: Great players but they have had some hmm... difficulties cooperating in recent years. But that may also be a solved problem with the new coach Blanc. The old one was a moron.

England: Like France, great players of you look at the names. They have a good side, no doubt about it. However that are never as good as they think that they are themselves. Heck they are world champions before every tournament. And also they have horrible goalies. Not just the usual "not good" ones. They have goalies that can (and have) totally screw them over.

That is my opinion on group D

France and England suffer now and will suffer in 2012 from the same problems they always do... A bunch of overpaid primadonnas that can't play as a team. It's a disgrace (and I support both teams with a paper bag over my head).

As for the Dutch, I think after that final in 2010 (remember the kick to the chest?) they should be barred from the Euro.

My money's on Spain (but don't tell my friends or I'll get baguetted--mon dieu!). They're still on a high from the world cup.
