It's been a few months since I have checked out mugu headers. I was checking one out and saw that it was Benin, and then I realized it was a Gmail account. Not the first time either. Did Gmail stop stripping headers?

I just sent a gmail letter to another one of my addys and it resolved to the google server at Mountainview. Gmail is still safe, yours must have been some kind of redirect. |

Gmail still strips originating IPs. As Dr. Mike said, the scammer likely used some sort of mailer. I've noticed this a few times with gmail headers on scam scripts. |

If your lad used any third party mailer, or application (like Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook etc.) then the IP is not hidden. |

Headers are stripped if sent from a web browser. Not if a client such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird is used. |

As others have said, there is a way of sending through Google with SMTP, and if you do that the IP address will show up in a header. It should say "Received from [lad's IP address] by something.1e100.com with ESMTPS" or something like that. (1e100 is a scientific notation for a huge number called a googol. Some Google IP addresses reverse-resolve to that.) |

Whenever I set up a new baiting account, I always send a test email to myself and run the headers just to be sure everything is still stripped. I always use webmail clients, so I never have a problem. |

I sometimes use Gmail, but primarily using Hushmail at the moment. As far as I'm aware (and have personally experimented), they both strip originating IPs from their e-mail headers. Safe baiting  |
