Hi Knightrider, welcome to "the Eater". To reiterate what other posters have said: read, read and read some more. Educate yourself not just with the baiting aspect of 419, but the scam itself and its various nuances and not to mention varieties. When I first came across this site (not sure how I did, now), for a few months before I ever signed up, I read and re-read Shiver Metimbers's baits in the Letters Archive, then read the various FAQs on the main site as well as on this forum. I lurked a long time before ever registering, and once I registered I posted a couple of times before going off and lurking some more. I've put many, many hours into reading this forum; there is a mountain of information, all of which is interesting and educational.

The baits are interesting and quite often hilarious, but they're also a tutorial on how to bait. You may or may not want to delve into baiting yourself just yet, if at all. If you do, then please do read everything and bait safe. This has been discussed countless times, but is very important.

Advice to get started:

(a) open a bogus e-mail account. Gmail is preferred, since it will hide your IP address. Use totally fake info in opening the account (and in the subsequent bait).

(b) Go to the "surplus" forum. Select a juicy scam e-mail (or select a dozen!)

(c) Send an e-mail to each scammer: "I just got your e-mail. I am very interested. Please tell me more"

Move forward from there! Use short e-mails at first - they seldom read the first few e-mails. Ask a question or two with each e-mail to force the mugu to get off script.
