I'm 100% positive my mom is being scammed by a nigerian scammer. She recently separated from my father and then started looking at dating sites like plentyoffish.

When my sibblings and I confronted her about sending him money, she denied it but we all know as a fact that she did send him money. He claims to be a German contractor from Ohio and i've personally spoken to him and he does not have German accent. He promises to come back to the states after my mom sends him money but something always comes up.

My mom is very stubborn and stupid. I have no clue what's going through her head. But that time i've spoken to him was the day before he was supposed to leave and come here to the states. The next day he didn't show up and I think my mom started to realize that he is a scammer. But she still continues to talk to him and not sure why.

What is there to do?

p.s. my mom is the type of person who is impossible to argue with because she always thinks she's right. We've given her the hardest evidence but feels like we know nothing because we're her kids and that we don't know what she's going through.

Go to the sister site www.scamwarners.com and post this on there. A lot of us are on there and hopefully will be able to give you advice better than I can.

In RL, I have a profile on Plenty of fish, but I have seen my share of Scammers on it a well.

Check the headers on the email. Do they point to where he says he is? If not, show your mum this and hopefully she'll start to get the idea. She's possibly still hoping against hope he's not a Scammer, but if he's been sent cash, he'll keep trying to get more out of her.

Try to get your mum to drop him, and hopefully your piece of turd will move on when he realises he won't get anymore out of her. Welcome to eater btw, I just wish it wasn't under these circumstances

I support the suggestion by internationalchrysis - the victim support team at scamwarners is very experienced at dealing with situations very much like your own --- a relative is deeply involved in a so-called romance scam, is very stubborn about it and just won't see the light. It is possible in many cases to convince the victim that indeed they are talking to a scammer and should cut off contact entirely, but requires a lot of patience and effort to do so.

There is a specific romance scam forum at scamwarners here:
http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13

If you post as many details of your mom's story as possible over there (leaving out her personal details, and yours), it would be most helpful. In many cases this allows the scamwarners team to find cases that are exactly the same, sometimes even the scammer using exactly the same routine with multiple victims at once. This can often provide the jolt that victims need to realise that indeed it's a scam and contact can be discontinued.

Good luck, I appreciate your efforts to help your mother out.
