Two Nigerian mugus who scammed a US pensioner out of £245,000 have been jailed.

Two fraudsters who convinced a pensioner she had won a £5.7m lottery jackpot before conning her out of her life-savings were jailed for a total of 50 months today.

Joshua Obasuyi, 49, and Julius Oweka, 48, were part of a Nigerian gang who tricked U.S. Professor Marie Lowery, 80, a retired lecturer at the University of Houston, Texas, into handing over £245,000.

Two and a half years for stealing quarter of a million pounds and with evidence that they've been up to much more.

Hardly a deterrant is it?

"Come to the UK and scam. Even if we catch you redhanded, it'll just be a minor blip in your criminal career."

And they'll be released after serving half their sentences. I know there are sentencing guidelines, but it's not long enough.

I'm still shocked and terribly sad about what happened to the old lady. Probably she is all on her own, or a relative would have told her to stop years ago.

I used to think that lotto lads are pritty much on the same level as Senegalese Cocoa Orphans - teenagers with a poor grasp of foreign languages. But these well-fed thugs had a well organised business going, with an office and probably some lads working for them.
