And thanks also to everyone else who reported those posts. The alarms were going off all over the place.

But it's your diligence that's the biggest part of keeping this site clean and on topic. A big thumbs up to all of you for being active participants.

As a sidebar, we try hard to vet each new signup as they come in. But sometimes spammers are quicker than we are and we don't get to pre-emptively ban them. That's where the 'Report this Post' button is so important.

One of the many non-baiting forums I frequent has a severe lack of moderation. Spam is a big problem. Recently an active member posted a question about how to get rid of all this spam cluttering the board. A moderator happened to pass through that day and posted a reply saying to click on the [!] icon to report spam. Okay, all well and good, but while the moderator wrote that supposedly helpful post, he did nothing about all the spam posts right below his.... And when I clicked the 'report post' icon on all the spam, I got messages saying "this post has already been reported." Five days later all the spam is still there. Rolling Eyes

^^Your example shows that you, the other mods and admins here on Eater deserve a lot of credit for the clean and orderly site we enjoy and love. We (non-mods/admins) could report spam all day long -- as you did on the other site you mentioned -- but if there's nobody on the other end who gives a damn, nothing happens.

I've run across the occasional small hoster whose forums are nothing BUT spam. It's disgusting and makes it obvious they exist only to host fraud sites for their fellow lads -- which makes it easier for me to report upstream and get them suspended.

My main point is that the quality of a forum is a direct reflection of the quality of the mods/admins. I've been spoiled by the quality of Eater! Thumbs up

I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing or boastful but in my experience it is true that this is a particularly well-run forum. None of the other forums I frequent comes close.

One huge pet peeve that I see on virtually every forum is full requotes of quotes of posts. Someone will post 3 or 4 pictures and some comments; the next poster will copy the entire post, pictures included, and add his comments; the poster after him will copy everything from the second post, now with double sets of pictures and all text... After a few posts you can't even find the the comments because of the clutter, scrolling through the same pictures page after page after page.

On another forum there are no posted rules. The rules are totally arbitrary and very often nonsensical. Threads are deleted for no discernible reason. Individual posts are sometimes censored even if they are absolutely benign and non-inflammatory, with no reference left to let anyone know that the words posted have been changed. (I hate it when I read something under my name that I not only didn't write, but which is contrary to my views.) Recently someone started a poll to suggest that one subforum which covered a broad amount of material would be better if it were divided into two separate forums to make it easier to follow. (There are only 3 categories on the entire site -- it's certainly not cluttered!) It was a great idea. But an unknown moderator deleted it without comment, apparently because he didn't like the idea and therefore we were not allowed to discuss it. Rolling Eyes

That's when I come back here and enjoy the fact that rules are clear. Threads are rarely locked, but if they are, they are left with an explanation. If a single post violates a rule, it may be partially redacted but an explanation will always be left so everyone knows why that decision was made, and which moderator did it. The only time posts or threads disappear completely from these forums is if they are spam, duplicates, severe violations of basic rules (like racism), or if the original poster requests deletion and has a good reason why.

We strive to be very transparent about why we make the decisions we do. Fortunately, it's very rare that we need to. Members here are a cut above most forums; as a group, I think Eater members are smarter, more articulate, and more aware than on most forums.

When I was fairly new here (and really still am) I would see something I thought might need to be addressed by a MOD, but was hesitant to hit that Report post to a moderator button. One day another Eater member said that it was not a bad thing to do and nothing bad would happen to me. Now I do not hyperventilate when I click on that button if I think something might need to be addressed.

But then again, on thinking about it, and taking note of legal counsel, and wanting to keep all my fingers, toes, legs, arms, and other bits, perhaps not. Shocked

One forum I go on there are so many quotes of quotes its like looking down a rectangular tunnel. They even quote posts with pictures in, so you get the same photos over and over.

Then grown ups start childish flame wars with each other, all 'you said he said I said xxx' Rolling Eyes
