@delamancha :
if your friend used a new password for her gmail account it is highly unlikly that it can be hacked. There is no scammer out there with the ability to just hack a mail accounts - it is always phishing for the password or a trojan.
Your friend should set up a fresh operating system on her computer and then create a new email account. Or create the new email account from a different computer but then only access it from a different computer until the old computer is clean. And don't think you can clean you system with some free virus scanner - you have to rebuild the operating system.... no other way.
For a first test if there is a trojan use
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
this should also be on the new system.
And the new system should be protected by a firewall (it is unbelievable how many people have none).
A good free firewall is

but to pay for a firewall is not a bad idea at all. |

Ah, thanks. Yes, she is on board with that, as she knows that I am baiting him using three different accounts. Please PM me if you'd like to help out.
Also, if anyone has any hacking skills, it would be great if we can try to reclaim her account from this criminal, as it's clear hotmail isn't going to do anything.
Thanks again for your advice and support. |

Hacking is nothing that is to be discussed on 419eater.com
and no member will hack any email account because it is illegal.
What we can do is to keep the lad busy until hotmail is responding. |

It is not clear that her FB account or gmail account was hacked -- no scam messages have been sent from her FB account or her gmail account yet. Plus there are warning messages on her FB wall from her friends about the scammer, so presumably if the scammer had hacked in to her FB account then he would have erased those wall posts. I think FB and gmail probably blocked her out because of multiple password requests. This would also lead me to believe that there is not a trojan/keylogging program on her computer, as there wouldn't be any need to hit her account with password requests if they could get her password through a keylogger. She also uses a Mac, so that makes the possibility of a virus/trojan unlikely, but of course not impossible -- I got her to download some antivirus software for the Mac so she could scan her computer. Mac also has a built-in firewall included in the OS.
Thank you for your advice! |

I apologize. I did not mean to suggest that we do anything illegal. I just want to help my friend get her account back if possible. I thought it was comparable to a thief stealing a wallet and the victim stealing it back -- but if this is illegal to hack an account from a hacker in order to reclaim an account, then I apologize.
It's not clear at all when or if hotmail will respond. They must either have large numbers of accounts that have been hacked and/or are very short-staffed. (Or they just don't care.) |

Thank you for helping! Yes, gmail flagged it from the very beginning, so they must have an automated check of the IP address to see if it comes from a suspicious IP.
Any way you can trick the scammed into giving the password to the account? |

Should we start a thread - or perhaps have this one moved - behind login, just in case laddo gets Google-happy? Then we can freely post updates and perhaps recruit some more folks for the 'cavalry'. |

It will remain here - there is little to identify the scammer.
Did anyone miss this from earlier on ?

As fun as a massbait sounds, the scammer has information on the friend, the real account owner, and will connect any bait attempts to the real person--this would not be baiting safely. |

Yes, I checked with my friend and she is on board with it. Actually, I just called her again after writing this to confirm, and she is on board with it. She's aware of the risks, but she wants to get as much info on this scammer as possible. The Japanese police are taking her complaint seriously (she lives in Japan), so as much info on this scammer would be most helpful. (And keeping him busy so he doesn't prey on others is also a reason.)
Thanks again. |

My bad, I really missed the post of Dorothy.
Could please some mod clarify if the KEEP OFF from Dorothy applies after the account owner is giving her ok for a bait.
@delamancha:
Please understand and also explain to your friend that baiting this lad is bringing no info at all and since we already know that the lad is living in lagos there won't be any arrest because we won't get his real identity and the authoroties in Nigeria can do nothing without that.
If everybody in the contact list of your friends knows that her account has been hacked there should be no risk that the lad can use the hacked account to make money.
So the keep off from Dorothy is probably the best thing considering that the lad has all you friends private info.
Sorry if our offer to bait the lad gave you the false impression we could gain anything except from waisting the lads time. |

Thank you for the explanation. Yes, my friend is aware that there is virtually no chance of getting any information from this scammer, and that the primary objective is to waste his time. What all of you are doing is very much appreciated. I hope we can continue with the baiting. |

Apparently I wasn't clear enough the first time.
The email is linked to an innocent person's real-life information. If you start baiting that address, the scammer will associate your bait with the real account owner. That means that the bait is still linked to an innocent person's real life details. It's not "ok" to ignore safe baiting just because the linked real life details don't happen to belong to you.
We have safe baiting rules here for a reason. They need to be respected, period. It does not matter if the box owner says it is ok--the box owner is not a baiter, and does not understand the reason behind those rules. I expect the baiters here, especially those who have been here for a while, to understand and follow safe baiting policies.
delamancha:
-Does your friend want her facebook account reported as a scam and closed? Or any other email/social networking accounts the scammer can find?
-Does she want thousands of scam emails sent out to random people in her name (and then to deal with the police if a victim falls for the scam and reports HER as the scammer?)
-Does she want her address used as the return address in fake check scams?
-Does she want any other email addresses she has closed and/or used as the return address in scams?
-Does she want her facebook friends, family, even her employer harassed about her?
-Does she want her name/address/personal info used in romance scams or fake job scams (again leading clueless victims to blame her?)
-Does she want any photos in her email box used in scams?
These are all things that angry scammers have done to baiters (or in some cases real victims that pissed them off). Some of these are relatively frequent occurrences.
The more people mess with him, the more angry he will get at the box owner--and the more likely he will do one or more of these things out of anger.
KEEP OFF. |

Thank you to all who helped. I appreciate it. I'm sorry we could not continue, but I do understand and appreciate the reasons why we cannot. |

An update:
My friend got a call from a Japanese newspaper (she lives in Japan), and they are going to do a story on her situation and on these kinds of scams in general. One of her contacts on her hotmail address received the scam message and got interested in the story from it. She thinks it will be a good way to warn the Japanese public about these kinds of scams.
Thanks again for all your assistance. |
