A helicopter pilot died in a crash in Alberta Canada yesterday. He was fighting wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes in the area. His chopper went down into a lake (not sure why), and several firefighters suffered hypothermia trying to rescue / recover him.
I propose a toast to those all over the world who go in while the rest of us are getting out, to those who risk it all to keep us out of danger. Not all heroes wear bright capes, but they do exist. |

He was filling up a water bucket when a witness said the machine just fell out of the sky. It looks, at this time, to be a mechanical failure. The Transportation Safety Board is doing a full investigation, and they never give out details until they're finished. His name still hasn't been released in the news.
I once asked a couple of firefighters why they do what they do. They couldn't give any single definitive reason, but they said it's totally worth it. |

In 1983 two units of the Country Fire Authority - 12 men in all - were wiped out on duty during the horrific Ash Wednesday bushfires in Victoria.

Amen! These men and women put it all on the line for everyone else. We had a tragic fire in Colorado in the 1990's where 14 brave men and women were killed. I like the idea of having a toast to them, especially since Memorial Day is fast approaching here in the U.S.
