Hi dudes

Been baiting a lad now for a month. (I've been through two different characters) and it's going really good. Paranoid is guiding me well, and is a great mentor..

I've noticed one thing. Whenever anyone new registers here, the first advice they get hit with is "bait safe"... OK, I understand the reasons - and I have made sure that my baiting activities are completely safe.

BUT...

In view of this being the NUMBER ONE bit of advice that everyone throws straight at new members, have there actually been any examples of things going seriously wrong by having NOT baited safe? Any horror stories? Just curious...

There was a legend on this forum some years back about an individual who used his office fax machine to send something to a mugu. Unbeknownst to the sender, the office fax machine automatically printed information on the outgoing fax - the name of the office.

Some point later, an individual come to the lobby of the baiter's office, and asked for the baiter's character's name.

There have definitely been accounts of real victims traveling to Nigeria to meet with mugus and never being heard from again.

So, bait safe!

don't be scared, as usual, common sense will guide you...

one thing I believe is important: never bait from your school, college, workplac, etc., as all the emails sent usually go trough a fixed IP and locating your exact location would be easy

One of the things that makes Eater Eater is that above all we encourage safe baiting and never condone risky practices, meetings, etc. Many people, especially new starters, may not understand how many footprints they leave online, and how sites like facebook will actively blare out information you had every right to assume was private when it suits them. This is why we lay down strict rules on baiting safe, encouraging people to drop scammers where any real-world details may be findable - baiting does not need mavericks getting into trouble for the sake of their own egos, spoiling it for the rest of us.

There's that chap Huckle or something (nothing to do with this site) who's baiting style includes a lot of "look at me, look at me". I see that as counterproductive. All the time he is clambering for attention, he isn't distracting/diverting scammers, or helping victims (like our good friends at scamwarners, or romancescam, or aa419). Instead he is making baiters look like chancers and foolhardy. I think his motivations are his own, but not compatible with the Eater way.

So we say "bait safe" as a mantra. It means we can accept all comers with all technical abilities, and they will know we will not put them at risk by learning to bait. And we stay safe and baiting safely. I am a whistling banana and the main admin is a <strike>rabid ball of fluff</strike> cuddly squirrel as far as the world is concerned, and that degree of segragation means we can all carry on with real life knowing our baiting lives will not interfere Smile

Was that the fool who thought that mugus were ONLY in Nigeria? I think the he/she had a few baits under his/her belt and knew it all.

The facts are mugus can belong to extensive syndicates and YES no matter where you are they probably have a few friends who can stop by for a visit.

The LA Times Interview a former scammer years ago and he said scammers have contacts across the globe (Nigerian Cyber Scammers - By Robyn Dixon LA Times Oct 20, 2005) to pay people a visits.

There are scammers all over the place. However goofy, stupid and harmless they may seem they are dangerous criminals and all care should be taken to ensure safety.

I know I would not want a lad to know where I work or live not just because I don't want one to show up on my door but also I wouldn't want to be harassed at either place.

I made the mistake of using a new app on my iPhone to place a VoIP call and it showed my RL cell number. The lad called a bunch of times before I convinced him it was a throw away phone. It worked because it was a mass bait and I was playing a fellow scammer trying to recruit him to my gang.

It's not something to be paranoid about but it is also very easy to bait safe. There are good reason to do it and only stupid reasons to not.

All good advice, and I thank you all.

I know my own baiting is safe, and my mentor (Paranoid) has been watching my back, but I was just curious...

But, I have to say, this is by FAR the best urban sport I have ever taken part in... Of course, I understand the global reasons why we do it, but you must all surely admit to a little self satisfaction when you get a good laugh?

Of corse it's great to know your wasting a lads time and hopefully taking away his time he spends with real vics but it has to be fun too. Great stress reliever too kicking around the lads.

This is a true story, hope it does not get me into trouble, now I live in Australia.

A few months into my SAFE baiting career and I am sitting at the pc reigning terror on the lads, and there is a knock on the door of my private home.

I opened the door , and there was a African man standing there, do you think i pooed my pants, (well the thought occurred to me), I thought god they have tracked me down, but how could they ?

I kid you not,
this fellow tells me he is from Nigeria and paused
and then tells me he is collecting for orphans. Shocked

I told him sorry not interested, so moral is bait safe its easy to do, being a baiter has to be fun Very Happy

That is the chap I meant, although I sounded somewhat pompous about it. I just find his attitude to the safety of himself and his friends and family a bit cavalier, and would not condone it, and nor would Eater. Doubtless he has some good baiting results and does a lot of good as well, but that's his style and choice, not one we encourage at all.

I think it`s great to be constantly reminded of baiting safe... The way I see it it`s a "duty of care". It shows me that every one here is watching out for me (us). Whilst I am very new to this, as time goes on I also will be looking after the newcomers, and im sure I too will be advising to Bait safe.

The way I look at this..We can be behind a computer and it seems almost detached and unsureal sometimes. But there are people out there who are greedy dangerous and have no morals. We are "playing with these people".

When I hear "bait safe" again, I will see it as you guys looking after me and "waking me up" from time to time.

messing with a dumb lad in a Nigerian cafe is one thing, as long as you don't go there and don't let him know where you are you're pretty safe. But you can get much deeper into this and it's no longer a game when you start messing with organised crime syndicates.

Long story ... but someone blew my "cover" (quite accidentally he claims). I had to drop the bait which was heading for arrests and Federal prison sentences. There was some seriously scary stuff going on.

For my own safety I stopped baiting altogether ... to go back would land me in so much trouble with my missus it's just not worth it! Laughing
