Can a fake Gmail account be traceable through IP addresses?

Hi,
I'm new to this and just started after almost getting scammed with a phony car add on Craig's List. Some of the rules for the site recommend using an untraceable IP address and, as far as I know, Gmail cannot be traced since outgoing mail originates from the server and not your home computer. Is this a safe assumption?

So far as I know, if you log-into gmail with your browser you'll be fine. If you use your email app (i.e., Outlook, Entourage, Apple's Mail, etc.), then the IP may go through.

I always sign-into to gmail's site and do my emails that way.
