Got 419eater into the papers

The other day, my local paper ran an article on online scams and how people are still falling for them. So I sent in a text to the editor (they print the best ones every day) mentioning 419eater and Scamwarners and what do you know, they printed the text message up in the "top text" spot. Basically, it went "if you think you are being scammed, check with these websites".

So there will be some people who read the paper (it has citywide circulation) who would have gone to have a look, at least out of curiosity. And maybe, just maybe, it might have warned a victim before they got in too deep.

I've tried with my local TV station. They have a segment called "The Real Deal," and many times they talk about scams and stuff. They tell folks to contact their local police department about those scams and 419 scams.

I post in the forums and tell them to contact scamwarners and to check out Eater. I've told the gal who does the segment to do it also. But it was basically ignored. Just an email back that she would check it out, but I doubt she did; because 2 weeks later her segment was the grandparent scam (i.e..: scammer hacked into an email account and poses as a grandson or granddaughter and needs money sent via WU right away). Her advice--contact the local police department....

And I've sent several emails over the last several months explaining how this scamming stuff works, but I am ignored.

@dwatina go to the tv station, meet the young lady in question and then see if you can take her out to dinner! Wink

Contacting the local news stations that have similar segments such as dwatina mentioned might be a good idea.

Another idea might be if you have senior citizen's community centers in your area and find out that they are looking for someone to show the seniors computer skills, one could show basic computer skills PLUS also teach the teachers about "scams". That would be a nice way to help those who are very vulnerable in your community about such scams

@morgain: No way I'd take that gal out to dinner. She looks like she could eat a lot. It would cost me a paycheck to feed her.
