On TV at the moment
over 3 million people in the UK get scammed each year.
over £3.5 billion has been scammed out of UK pubilc last year. |

These figures are impossible to substantiate, although 5% of the population every year sounds unlikelily high to me, especially once you discount kids, etc it's more like 7-8%. More likely 'expert' aggregates a load of reported crime figures, and estimates that only x% of cases get reported, exttrapolates, rounds up, and successive press releases find it handy to add a few and round up in the chase for the most impactful headline.
Once you've worked in TV at all you won't take a word of it at face value, not even (especially not!) the news. I know journos who've bought their own flowers to tie to railings to make the car crash stories more poignant. TV lies pathalogically, it really can't help itself. |
