After a bait where I eventually accused the lad of sending me fake documents and wanted to know what he was going to do to explain himself, he went quiet and I assumed I'd been dropped. However this landed in my inbox today after a 10 day silence.

Fifty percent is far too much. Tell him your conscience only allows you to accept thirty. Then when he agrees have a re-think and barter him slowly back upwards.
