I suspect that all of us, when we see emails from 'officials', 'ministers' etc asking us to respond to a Yahoo email addy, laugh and say 'scam'!
My boss was a recent participant in the Cancun climate change talks, and he's come back with business cards for all sorts of people. And quite a few of the chaps and chapesses from what might be called developing countries use Yahoo email addresses.
I'm now wondering if I've been unintentionally rude to some genuine officials over the years!  |

But it's true, sitekillers sometimes come across african or asian bank sites which are so awful that there is no way you'd ever think they are real. In some cases the <i>copies</i> look better than the original. |

My career in civil service took me to South Korea for a few years. Only a few of my Korean counterparts were allowed Internet access or email accounts at work. Any emails I got from most of them came from their home accounts, either Yahoo or KorCom. |

^^I agree, it's not immediately suspect. In RL many people don't have access to their work email client/server when traveling. I will correspond with clients via their private addresses if that's what they request. It's faster, and when they get back to their offices they can download everything to their archive or whatnot. For them, it's not a matter of not having access in the field, but that their work email server may either be out of range (?), or behind a huge firewall because of business concerns.
I think context is paramount. When sitekilling, if I see a yahoo email address for a registrant, I dig a little deeper to see if the registrant is faking something. More often than not, the email address is the least of my concerns. |
