Scam artist exploiting couple who gave away millions

23/12/2010 6:41:46 AM

The Canadian Press
LOWER TRURO, N.S. — Allen and Violet Large made headlines around the world last month after quietly giving away almost all of the $11.2 million they won in a lottery this year.
Unfortunately, a scam artist also took note of the elderly Nova Scotia couple's generosity and is using their name to try to rip off people.
The Larges learned Wednesday that someone has been sending out emails in their names.

The recipients are asked to send the Larges their personal information so they can receive some of the couple's lotto winnings.

The Larges won the Lotto 6-49 jackpot on July 14 and gave all but $200,000 away to family, friends, churches, charities and hospitals where Violet Large is being treated for cancer.

Allen Large said he and his wife, both in their 70s, are hurt that someone would try to profit from their good intentions.

"It really pisses me off to think that somebody would try to make a fast buck off of something that we have done to make things easier for other people," he said from their Lower Truro home.

"That's what makes me so cross. I hope they catch him (and) put them away for a good long time (working) on a rock pile with a teaspoon to break up stones -- in his bare feet."

He said it's unbelievable that someone has taken his name and used it to exploit people.

"After all the good we've done," he said, his voice trailing off.

There was no word Wednesday if anyone had actually been scammed by the bogus emails.
