I had lawn darts as a kid. They were banned much later, sometime in the mid-80's.

No more fun toys for kids anymore!! Sad

We used to use 3' lengths of bamboo, with cardboard fins spliced into the ends, as duck hunting weapons when they got into the strawberry fields. We ate a lot of duck growing up Very Happy

We had a piece of 2' dowel with a cross in one end in which we put dart flights in. We put a 4" nail at the other end fastened with string or gaffa tape. We then cut a notch in the dowel about half way down, wrapped string around, kept hold of the string and threw the dart in the air.
They could travel Very Happy

I stopped when it was heading for the dog and I'm shouting at the dog to shift fast!
Dog looked around and then just looked at me as if to say "what's the problem"
That dart missed the dog by about 4"

Never showed my kids that one but they can make a decent smoke bomb from salt petre and sugar...

^^^ Sounds like a victim of step on the legos and those little Barbie high heels in the night or on the steps!

Back when I was a child there was no Consumer Group that warned of the danger of toys, but we managed to somehow survive, falling out of trees was the worst problem and we never wore helmets riding bikes, but had lots of gravel picked out of the arms and legs.

I think these kids born after 1990 aren't going to be able to survive in life very well... I'm a 76er so I still had most of the fun/dangerous stuff, no bike helmets, tree climbing, going to the park with friends (no adults; dad's instruction: if anyone bugs you, kick him between the legs and run.)... I believe all those various childhood mishaps just prepared us and strengthened us for Real Life... these kids are deprived of that and get thrown into the big sea...

I had a friend get killed riding a bike into a culvert pipe that was across the footpath, on a vacant section, at the bottom of the hill we used for speed trials. We were 10 yrs old then

He didn't want to drop his bike to stop, or get off, went down the hill, gravel road, bounced over the kerb, and hit the pipe section.

We just figured it was natural selection happening, same as most of us having arms and legs in slings and plaster, concussion, measles, mumps, polyomylitis, 10% of your beginning class at whatever school, back of beyond, went missing each year. Accidents, falling off the tractor was always a good one, I remember 5 or 6 kids at school doing that, and going through the discs or harrows, falling out of trees was always good for a broken arm, collarbone, leg, visiting cousins that lived in the city was always worth a hit by a vehicle.

It's all far too safe now, and the GOVT knows best.

Too much safety crap.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I lived in a neighborhood where the street and sidewalks were on a hillside. We would skateboard down the sidewalk, who knows how many times I wiped out, without a helmet or any pads.

My 7 year old rides on a flat surface with a helmet an training wheels on his bike, cause the law says so.

I remember learning the valuable skill of "jump, tuck, and roll" and learned later in life that such a tactic during a bicycle collision lessens impact and spreads the force over more surface than swan diving into pavement as it seems so many like to do nowadays (including professional bikers).

I also remember smashing fingers in sword battles with swords made from wood not foam. Don't forget we used real BB guns not low powered airsoft. Shocked

When I think of some of the things we did with air guns and fireworks when I was young. Home made rocket launchers and hand grenades. Shocked

I don't care what the stastistics say, and as I keep reminding lads: More people are kicked to death by donkeys, than die in air crashes.
