People were pretty racist on T.V back then. The racial slur 'sambo' seems to have come from
"The Story of Little Black Sambo" which was published in 1899 about a south Indian boy and some tigers. Not sure how the term became derogatory.
However this term might not be widely used in Africa for obvious reasons, hence why the knobend (my favorite derogatory term) used it.
