ParaNoid: Shocked You're American? I thought you were from the UK and emigrated to America recently.

Now as for British food, I can't really say that I've actually had it before. Unless you count the British version of "Kit Kat", "Milky Way", and "Smarties" than yeah, good chocolate but that doesn't technically count.

But I did see the British version of New Zealand "Marmite" which I hear is similar to Aussie "Vegemite." Neither of which I've tried.

I remember getting some good white pudding on the Isle of Lewis, and there's a great butchers in Beauly if you're ever up that way - I had been there for work but also made a detour there on my way back from Skye just to visit the butchers and Beauly Tandoori!

I've been to England. I like their breakfast, their pub menus, their sandwiches, their tea houses, and all those little snack things you eat during the day there.

But their suppers? OMG!! Shocked

I've been to Ireland too. I don't really see a big difference.

^ Do you think the salad was there just to make it look colourful?

Speaking on colourful try RED pudding
The ones we have round here come in a red case

btw black pudding is the one made with blood, white pudding can be vegetarian as its made of oatmeal, vegetable suet and onions in some places

Koko, vegemite and marmite are incompatible. If you can eat one, the other is unbearable. If you weren't raised on either though, they'll both be unbearable. The Kiwis have another version also called 'Marmite' but incompatible with the other two, if you want to try British marmite, you want what the kiwis call 'my mate' (black glass jar yellow cap).

Salty yeasty goodness, you love it or hate it, there is no middle ground.

^^ Vegemite is an acquired taste, you have to start training your children before they realise they can say "no" to different food.

Vegemite on Vogels Original Toast? Best stuff out Very Happy

Actually, toast, vegemite and a poached egg on top is divine.

The best meal I ever had in Scotland was at The Bothy in Fort Augustus.

I had Ireland come to me. My paternal grandmother was second generation Irish and in my youth I got my fill of the cuisine of the Auld Sod. To this day I have a strong aversion to boiled foods, especially cabbage, potatoes, and chicken.

I actually took a liking to meat pies in the UK. Cool

@ Bart Fargo I love brown bread in a can. You can get it with raisins or without raisins. That company Burnham & Morrill Co primarily did brick oven baked beans.

The brown bread is still available in some parts of the country, but it available online at the company. My very British former mother-in-law warmed it a bit and poured hard sauce on it. Yummy in the tummy.

For the Yanks a hard sauce is a sweet, rich dessert sauce made by creaming or beating butter and sugar with rum, brandy, whiskey, sherry, vanilla or other flavorings. It is served cold, often with hot desserts

Very familiar with the product, easily found in the supermarkets here in Maine (and I think they are based out of Portland)

When I first moved here, I sent a can of it to my brother out west. His reaction: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?? Laughing

And as for Cheese, as otterfan will testify, cheese always makes everything taste better

well ok, maybe not everything,

most things

well, some things, like toast, bacon and tomatoes with capers, anchovies, capsicums, onions and garlic with a smattering of fresh ground black peppercorns

gently grilled in the oven

then eaten with several cans of the local sponsors product

My sister is engaged to the son of a very, very Scottish man.

I can tell you with certainty that all of Scottish cuisine comes from people getting riotously drunk and then deepfrying everything in sight. And it is delicious.

The closest American parallel seems to be what happens when a bachelor gets his own deepfryer and then gets severely smashed. "Hm. I have a loaf of bread, a pound of bacon, some eggs, a half-empty jar of peanut butter, some sriracha chili sauce, and a few candy bars. I know! I'll stick everything between the slices, pack it into the fry basket, and in a few minutes be set for food for the next week."

Let this continue for generations, create an industrial revolution and conquer the entire world just to get tea and Indian food, and you will have Scottish cuisine.

Note: her fiancee has recently purchased a deep fryer. We are all terrified for his arteries.
