These people are not just scammers and liars, they are often kidnappers and murderers too, who wouldn't hesitate to see you dead if it meant a profit for them.

I've tried tugging on heart-strings in the past too, usually when I needed to be 100% sure I was dealing with an actual scammer and not just some misguided beggar. I've done the little old lady who can either buy food/medicine or send money to the scammer, and I've done the "I run an orphanage and this will be taking food out of children's mouths" routine. They don't care. Never feel sorry for them no matter what kinds of sob stories they come up with. They make Enron traders look like sympathetic Dickensian characters.
