Hello! Despite my magically inclined user name... I am actually pretty well educated when it comes to China and all things Chinese (since it is going to be my career). I also speak Mandarin..

I was hoping there might be a particular brand of scam or scammers that I could target with these skills? Either Chinese scammers themselves or scammers that impersonate Chinese bankers/officials and the like?

My e-mail constantly gets spammed with world of warcraft related scams... though I am not sure there is much I can do wtih those besides get the fake blizzard websites closed down...

Anyway I would appreciate ideas or suggestions Smile

I can't say I've come across many, if any, 419-type scams originated in China.

Phishing, yes. Phone lads, yes. Trolls, yes. 419...? Not in my experience. Asia, certainly, but specifically China, nothing rings a bell.

With regard to those who impersonate Chinese, your background knowledge won't do you much good as they'll just ignore you, and possibly move onto someone else if you appear to "catch them out."

I have seen a few scam mails that originate from Hong Kong and Mainland China, but it seems they are few and far between. All of them business parnership scams. Keep digging around, but it might take a while.

I have had Chinese language training and my career took me to Asia for five and a half years. I have received a few scam letters claiming to be from mainland China but their IP addresses trace back to Hong Kong. There are some free Chinese language word processors (I use North Star) but so far I the ones I found generate only simplified characters, and in Hong Kong and Taiwan they prefer traditional characters. I made some canned responses in North Star but after I send them the scammers usually come back asking me to use traditional characters or English.

^^^This doesn't appear to be a scam. It is a pitch for a tax agent service, which are quite common in China. They assist and advise foreign and domestic firms on issues and procedures regarding compliance with Chinese tax laws, which can be quite byzantine. I don't know how tightly regulated tax agents are in China, so it's possible that some of them are sketchy.

Yeah just advertising XD I do not want to scam a normal company. But writing in traditional characters should not be hard at all, I know windows vist and windows 7 have the capability built in... Both simplified and traditional uses the same pinyin system and there are always traditional-simplified character converers out there if reading traditional is too hard for you (the characters do not look /that/ different).

Well its too bad my skills will not be of much use :/ At least that is what it sounds like. Maybe if I enjoy e-mail baiting enough I might get into phone scamming but I figure I will start slowly first, hehe.

I'm only a newbie cherry here but maybe there is a guestbook type thing in a chinese website you can sign onto that will create chinese scammers like the english ones do?
Good luck & yes, shame to waste those skills?
