After work today, I went for a walk. Broad daylight, residential neighborhood, moderately busy street (and I am on the sidewalk, which is set back some feet from the street by a grassy strip). I should have been perfectly safe - but I was almost run over.....Not only all that, but it came at me at FULL speed from BETWEEN two houses....
I jumped - it swerved but did not slow down, and passed me within just a couple of feet....then, straight across the street and onto the grounds of a school (NOT going up the driveway, but straight across country, so to speak) and behind the school then out of sight.
I do not know who was more scared or surprised. Me or the full grown deer.

Which one of you was the "deer in the headlights"?
I'm glad you had quick reflexes. |

I think we were, mutually, in the other one's headlights (although both of us were on foot!) -- both the deer and I seemed equally startled and frightened.

I've only had deer encounters while in my car. Almost hit a family of FIVE deer when they decided to cross too close in front of my car. One already had a bad limp so it still probably didn't learn it's lesson about cars vs deer and who would win.
Scarier are moose cause with their huge body and spindly legs, will smack right into your windshield (windscreen) and kill ya. Remember, they are the size of a friggin horse!!
But it Maine, if you hit one of these and live, you have the option of taking the dead animal with you so you can get it butchered and have venison or moose meat for the next month or so!!
Very glad though you are OK Bruin!! |

That ended well Bruin, good reactions.
Arround here we have antelope
and the rut is on so they will nail you when you get too close, out running is useless as they go over 60K/hr about 40 miles an hour.
At least they don't come to town too often |

I had a deer try to vault over a Nissan Stanza wagon. It missed by about 2" and put hoof prints in the side of the van. It ran off once it got it's feet under it.
Driving to Oregon a couple of years ago, had a deer jump out in front of my pick up in the middle of the night/morning. It (thankfully) froze in it's tracks and I dodged left. At the last millisecond it leaned to the edge of the road. All in about 2 seconds. I am glad I was in a big truck instead of a small car.
The most strange one was driving though remote Colorado dodging whiteout conditions on the main roads. I came upon a series of turns and said to my wife, "There's going to be a deer here." Sure enough at the next corner, a buck with a huge (must have been) 6 point rack was standing there almost ready to cross the road. Again I think having a big 4x4 truck kept the deer from thinking it could out run the vehicle.
I am glad you were just startled! |
