Dear Mr Nouet

Dear Mr Nouet
Thank you for your reply and additional information. You are right, the gold price is high and still rising. I need to invest a fair amount of Euros safely. The Euro is about to go in free fall, as I'm sure you know, and investing in gold is probably the best option at the moment.
Please inform me of the weight of a single bar, so I can calculate the amount of bars I can purchase. I assume you work with the standard 400 troy but I'd like to be sure.
We'll also have to discuss the day price at some point but we can leave that until the purchase is about to be made. Discussing it now seems pointless to me, unless you would like to start already.
Kind regards

I sent a message to Mr Kojo and soon a short phonecall comes in. A friend has kindly recorded a very lengthy welcome message on my answering service, in her best receptionists voice. The caller is thanked for calling "the offices of DeWindt" and is then forced to listen to an endless "press 1 for...", "press 2 for..." etcetera menu before he can finally leave a message.

Dr Mr Kojo
I heard your message on my answering service. Thanks for calling. Sorry for not answering the phone myself, I have some reasons for that. I won't bore you with them and besides, being a gold dealer you can probably think of them yourself.
Mr Nouet asked me to contact you for details about purchasing an amount of gold bars. What do you have on offer? And which gold price are we expected to follow?
Kind regards,
D. DeWindt

Dear Mr. Kojo
I was pleased to receive your passport and the photos. Thank you for providing me with this information. I'll have to get back to you about the gold price, since there are some calculations to do here. Nothing major, just a few routine checks.
I regret to admit the lines of communication are less than perfect at the moment. We have received word our company is being watched closely by the IRS and we are virtually sure our phone lines are monitored. For this reason we have set up an answering service for our clients and we avoid using the office numbers for business transactions for a while. Messages left at the answering service are forwarded to us as encrypted sound files, a very safe method of communication. All our emails are sent using encrypted servers and temporary Gmail accounts make tracing them virtually impossible. I hope you'll appreciate our concerns for your safety.
As I explained to Mr. Nouet, one of our clients has a substantial amount of Euros to invest. He is not interested in tax forms for reasons I assume you'll understand. He is very interested in your offer but likes to know which export options are available. Once purchased, the gold has to cross the Atlantic. Can you provide any service for that? Also, I assume you are aware that you are selling the gold for approx. 65% of its current value. Is there any particular reason for this?
Kind regards
D. DeWindt

Dear Mr D. DeWindt,
Thanks for your email and i am happy for the qustion about the price you ask me
I am not selling the gold international value ok and the price i give you is ok but i can come down for the price because price is not a problem, is between you and me pls note.
One more thing i need to speak with you on phone before we start the transtcion. since your office phone is been monitored can you give me your owner line so that i will call you and speak with you.
From what you have ask me that your investor is happy with the offer and i will be happy also to sell my gold to your gruop.
Yes why not i will cross the gold Atlantic since the buyer is ready to pay the tax and i want to know from you, how many kg of gold bars you want to buy before i will calculat the tax and update you.
I want to know from you how many kg you want to buy
As soon as you purchased the gold today and the next day is shipment and it will take only 3 days for you to receive the gold in your country adderss, all the export documents will bear your name as the owner of the gold
Here we have many shipp who can do the shipment the next day to you as soon as we get the documents in your name and the adderss
I hope you get me clear
I am waiting for your mail and also i will try and call you again
Thanks

Dear Mr Kojo
I think you misunderstood my explanation about the problem with our phone lines. At the moment we won't use our lines (business or personal) for our and your protection. You can always leave a message at our own number and we'll get back to you via secure email as soon as possible. At the moment this is our preferred method of communication.
The amount of money my client is willing to invest is 750.000 Euros. After the first delivery there is an option of a second purchase. This will be of a higher value I'm not allowed to disclose yet. With the price you've quoted that would come down to an initial purchase of about 28 kilos.
Please inform me if this is an acceptable amount to you and how you would wish to receive payment.
To help our transaction and communication it would be easier for us if you stopped changing the subject of the email. You've been assigned a client number (DWN100614/3) and keeping this number in the email's 'subject' field helps us to keep track of our communication with you. Thank you.
Kind regards
D. DeWindt

And from then on all emails indeed have "DWN100614/3" as their subject line. Nice. Makes it a lot easier to keep track of this bait amongst the others in my inbox.

Dear Mr D. DeWindt,
Thanks for your email and also expline to me why we should use email only for our communication since you have expline to me is ok.
The amount your client want to invest is ok for the transaction
Yes after the first delivery of the 28kg and your client want more higher value purchase goods that is not a problem all i need from you is just tell me how many kg your client want every week or month or year tham we sign contract on that i hope you get me clear,
I think that the price i give you is ok because that is our local price here and at time gos on we will come donw or go up because the price can come up this month and next month it will come down.
The amount is acceptable by me and the payment will be made by bank transfer to our bank account which i will give you to transfer the money to get all the documents in the name of the buyer before shipment.
I have just make the calculations now both the amount of the gold and the shipment and tax everything will cost the buyer Below
The cost of the gold is $ 739.200.00 at the price of $ 26,400 x 28kg
The tax is $ 10,000
To get all the documents in buyer name is $ 3,500
All in total is $ 752.700 USD
I hope you get it clear
Thanks

I just tried to call you on a secure line. My client has an urgent question about the tax papers. Unfortunately your phone appears to be out of reach or switched off. I heard a pre-recorded error message, I assume from your network provider. I am extremely unhappy about that. Setting up secure lines is a costly business and I'm not going to jeopardize the safety of my client and myself again. When your phone is working again, please call me at the number below. After the message and the tone enter you DWN number (it's in the subject line of this email) followed by #702# and then your own phone number. The system will then connect you, securely, to my private number.
I hope to hear from you soon.
D. DeWindt

The "DWN number" in the subject line is 100614/3. Entering the number on a phone's keypad shouldn't be too difficult. Apart from the / of course, that's rather tricky. One hour later a message comes in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXjvoBh9zSc
The sound quality is very poor but as far as I can make out, Mr Kojo first apologizes for the phone problems, then reads out the "DWN number" in the subject line, and then assures me that the tax has to be paid. That's all very nice, but it's not what DeWindt asked for.

I was just informed by my secretary that you used our answering system WITHOUT entering the codes I gave you. This means your call was NOT automatically forwarded to a secure line and you have put our transaction and privacy in danger. Should you fail to comply with our safety measures AGAIN we will no longer contact you. Please call us back, and enter the codes I gave you in my previous email using the NUMBER KEYS on your phone or keyboard. THEN leave your message and you'll be forwarded to a secure line so we can talk. Thank you.

Dear Mr Kojo
It appears you completely misunderstand the system we have installed. Yes, you get the voicemail. Everybody does. AFTER the voicemail message you enter the numbers as required. Calling our number and then hanging up because you get the voicemail is pointless. Wait for the message to end, THEN enter the numbers. Seriously, if you can't follow simple instructions like that, how on earth are you going to ship gold across the Atlantic in 3 days?
If I understand your message correctly you will pay the 10.000 USD in tax. Is that right? And what about the required name on the papers? Which name is that going to be? My client would prefer to remain anonymous for reasons I can't go into. Is it possible to have the name of a 3rd person on those papers?
Please call our number, WAIT FOR THE MESSAGE TO END, and THEN enter the numbers as required so we can talk. Thank you.

We are all busy people and nobody likes to waste time. May I remind you that the current delay is caused by your failure to follow simple calling instructions?
To be frank, I am surprised by your attitude and carelessness. I'm not buying a second hand car here, mr Kojo. My client has a lot of money to invest. Do you seriously believe he is going to rush into this and waive all precautions just because you say so?
That's not how we do business, sir. I will forward your message to my client and let him decide how to proceed. When I receive his answer you'll hear from me again.

We have problems. My client does not want the gold shipped by air (jet). There's too much hassle and too many checks at airports. Flight plans have to be registered, plane numbers logged, and all that. He wants it shipped by private yacht, preferably to Bonaire. This will take a longer time but for him that is not a problem. Furthermore he is not willing to send you any form of ID. This is supposed to be a confidential transfer, I am to act as the go-between. I can give you a name but I won't give you any ID.
I've been instructed to tell you that if these conditions are a problem, the deal is off.
Hoping to hear from you soon
D. DeWindt

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your email
Since the buyer want the shipment to be made by private yacht that is ok and also he dont want to send his ID is ok too and send me the name
one more thing you said that they is alot of checks at the airports, Look let me tell you something We have been doing shipment since more them 15 years now.
Yes they must be a check in the airport and if you have the documents of the gold they will be no problem at the airport. when the gold arraive at the airport you give the Custom the documents and they will ask you to carry your gold since you have the documents of the gold you dont have any problem with airport people.
That is why i said that all the documents must bear the name of buyer or Agent.
We ship gold out to many country like Dubai U.A.E and UK .Europe and China and also last year to US New York without any problem with the airport.
All shipment is only 3days.. any country in this world, buyer will receive the consingment in 3days after geting the shipment documents. which will be send by DHL to buyer
Since you are the Agent of the buyer is ok, you can act as his go-between and we do the documents in your name .
The condition is ok
I am waiting to hear from you
Thanks

Transport by private yacht is, as explained, the preferred method. If you are unable to provide this, my client has options to organize a yacht himself. We realize that this request is out of the ordinary, and we will do all we can to help. We are aware that it's possible to send gold through airport customs but my client prefers to avoid that route.
The required name on the documents is
M. Avro
Please contact me if you require further information.
Thank you

Dear Mr D. DeWindt,

Dear Mr. Kojo
Yes, I think we've got all the questions answered. We will organize the transport by private yacht ourselves, that is not a problem. If you could provide us with the name and coordinates of a small harbour we can use, it would be much appreciated. The Cotonou harbour is obviously too busy for us, we do not want to draw any attention to ourselves. What we need is a small harbour, preferably west of Cotonou.
Also, you mentioned payment for the gold by bank. Again, no problem. If you could provide us with details we can start preparing the money transfer. This makes payment a lot faster once the gold has been received.
Thank you
D. DeWindt

Dear Mr D. DeWindt,
Since Cotonou harbour is not much GOOD i think the best Harbour we can use now is called TEMA PORT GHANA WEST AFRICA
This harbour is good.. what did you think and the bank account will be send to you late today for the transfer
I am waiting for you to confrim that Tema port is ok
Thanks
Mr Anna Kojo
|
You ask for a small harbour and you get Tema, the busiest sea port in Ghana. Anyway...
Quote: |
Dear Mr Kojo
I forwarded your suggestion to my client and he doesn't mind moving to Ghana. However, he was a bit worried about Tema. According to his crew Tema is a very busy place with a lot of trade and people. If you can organize a secluded area in Tema where we will not be bothered and don't draw any attention, than Tema is fine. Otherwise we prefer a much smaller port.
Kind regards

I'm sorry to say I'm no longer going to try. I have explained to you why calling out is a problem in the first place. If you wish to contact me fast, leave a message at our answering system (+1206309xxxx) as I have explained before.
Thank you for the bank information, I have forwarded it to our accountant. I take it you started to prepare the required documents? Our crew has made some enquiries about Tema and they prefer the far east side of the harbour for docking. Please find us a spot in that area, preferably near a refueling station.
How do you prefer to proceed?

You appear to misunderstand my messages. Your phone may be switched on but I couldn't reach it. I assume your local network has problems. You also fail to explain how we are going to proceed. You can't honestly expect my client to dump 750.000 euros into your bank account without even having seen a scan of the documents or other evidence of progress on your side. My client is getting impatient and is beginning to doubt your competence. He has requested you send me the following items, preferably today:
- Scans of the documents you've prepared
- A map (or photos) of the spot in Tema we're going to use
- A photo of yourself
I think you should honour these requests as soon as possible. To be honest with you, I'm getting a little worried. I would not be surprised if my client decides to drop the entire plan if your answers aren't satisfactory, and that would be bad for you and me. We can both make a lot of money from this transfer so let's not mess it up.
Kind regards

I guess he didn't have any useful documents, nor a map, nor a photo of someone who could pretend to be himself.
It's a shame, as it was a very well-handled bait, with some brilliant ideas - particularly about playing the part of the 'middle-man', the go-between ... so that nothing would ever be your own suggestion, or your own fault. It is like you appeared to be the person with the least control .... while actually controlling everything.
And I like reading gold baits, too! |
