Hi everyone.

I've been a longtime fan of this website (ever since a friend sent me a link to the picture of a lad with a watermelon on his head Smile ), but only signed up now, as I've been targeted myself and thus decided to get involved.

I've recently been receiving phone calls on my (unlisted) cell from a number in Mali (+223) at weird hours. I never answered and they never left a voice message, but in googling the country code, I discovered that a lot of people received scam calls from such numbers. The usual script is that the scammer pretends to be from a collection agency, informs you that you have an unsettled debt with your phone provider, ISP or whatever and then threaten you to give them you credit card info for immediate payment, or otherwise end up with a bad credit score. Apparently they know the name of the person they call.

Now, I'm pretty sure the calls i'm getting are scams too, since i don't know anyone in that part of the world, so there's no reason for me to receive legitimate phone calls from over there.

My question is: are there documented ways to bait these lads? Has anyone ever tried it? What's the risk, given that they know the city i live in (based on area code), and might even know my name if they somehow got access to a database of unlisted phone #s. My initial impulse was to answer the phone, pretend i'm scared about my "debt" and want to settle it, and make fun of them by giving them fake CC info with some first & last name combination that sounds offensive when read out loud.
I thought of this quick "solution" just because I don't see a scam like this leading to the type of long and elaborate baits I've seen on this site.

Bad idea?

It is never a good idea to bait anyone that has any of your real information. You should ignore the calls.

Edit to add: As to the risks involved, they are international criminals who you just made fun of, and they know where you live. It's not likely that they would pay you a visit... but the fact that it is possible is more than enough reason to give it a miss.

Yeah, on second thought I guess you're right. Even though it's not very likely that they would cross the ocean just to find me in this 3 mil people city, it's still not worth risking it. Even if they don't come over, they can still post my name & number all over the internet, so I'll just keep ignoring the calls.

Maybe the best revenge would be to convince Justin Bieber to tweet the lad's number Twisted Evil

Ok, heading over to eater university now. Gotta learn some tricks of the trade and then start digging thru my email spam folder for some lads Smile
