Hello everyone.

I'm new here and need your help about an issue.

I live in USA. I want to buy a car from a British person who worked in USA for some time but living in UK now.

He told me some people said they wanted to buy the car so he traveled all the way from UK to USA but couldn't get any response from them. He said he wanted to be sure I am a serious buyer.

He asked me to deliver the 50% of the car via Western Union to his address in UK but to my wife's name. So he won't be able to collect the money (because it is sent to my wife's name) but he'd be sure that I am a serious buyer.

Is it really possible for him to collect the money this way? All I can think is he can create a fake ID of my wife and get the money but it sounds very extraordinary to me.

What should I do?

It's a scam.

The moment he has all the details, he'll hi-tail it down to the WU office and collect your cash. Then you won't see him for dust.

It is extremely easy for the scammer or a mule working for the scammer to collect the money. Just go over to scamwarners and look at the rental scams forum, and you will find several victims who lost their money that way.

WU is designed to allow someone who has been stranded (e.g. mugged) away from home to collect the money without ID. That means there are ways around the ID issue, and scammers know every one of them.

Anything where they want money in advance sent thru WU or MoneyGram, consider it a scam, rule of thumb.
