419Eater.com, the largest scambaiting website in the world with just over thirty four thousand members, has announced the release of a tool to chart the locations of scammers. This is the newest addition to their seven year old campaign to bring scam awareness to the masses.

The new informational service is called Scam Tracker. While still in its infancy, "Scam Tracker" allows members of the public a pictorial view of where internet scams are originating.

Scam Tracker uses Google Maps, giving the viewer a global picture of where scammers are operating. Viewers have the ability to zoom in and get more detailed information on various types of scams, including the Scammer's name and INTERNET IP address information.

A team of 419Eater members carefully review and continually update the information, which is collected from a variety of resources, including from actual victims of the scams.

In order to view the scam tracker simply go to http://www.419eater.com and click on the Scam Tracker logo.

How does it work ? Where are the data coming from ? IP address in the surplus section ?

(I´m missing the love rats from RUS, UKR and PHL though...but I know, they don´t normally "throw" formats. They come to you when you are registered on a dating site. So a diff. approach.)

@FrumpyBB - don't worry, I'm quite sure that as the database grows we will include the love rats

Right now the only way to access the data is via the map.

Looks fabulous!! Love the clustering! It is amazing how 419 Eater has grown so much since i have even been here! Imagine it would put up its own network of tracking satellites to find lads Wink

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm glad you are all enjoying this new 419Eater feature.

@jimkeymaster - we have a team of Scam Tracker Editors that data mine the scammers information from, amoung other places, surplus and place it into the database. Our system geolocates the IP address and places the coordinates into a database. When a member loads up the map our system simply maps the locations onto a Google Map. (well thats basically whats happening)

@Badgerbait - We had to introduce clustering into the system otherwise it would simply look like a mess. We have now added the capability of allowing the user to determine the cluster size as well as the type of scam they are interested in looking at.

This will continue to develop. Right now we are not releasing the other information that we have on the scammers to the general public.

@conga22 - This is something we are working on. Right now we only have a handful of Scam Tracker Editors - if all the members of 419Eater start handing them information, they will be overwhelmed fairly quickly. As I'm sure you can understand every precaution needs to be taken to ensure that the data entered into the Scam Tracker is accurate, hence we are growing this system slowly right now.

That is friggin' (2 words) Awe - some. I've just been checking it out.
When I click on a red balloon/ pin, and say for example it's the one
in Syracuse up-state NY. The info. (with the cool 3D shadow effect)
says "Ted Geener" (Recovery Scammer) My Q. is: would it have been alot more trouble to pimp out their e-address, or it might have been pointless because it could be a dated scam and the e-addy may not work any more ? Or he's already been baited.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, will that be the limit of the infors?
I'm trying to understand why the addy wouldn't be included because
people might recognize the e-add. or ? legal reasons? or ...
Too Much Information ? This is just a small point to make, overall
the Scam-Tracker map is mind-blowingly fantastic.

Alot of people have written and posted asking where do most of the scams originate. Others have been so narrow-minded as to think
ALL OF THEM, 100% were from Lagos. Sure a great majority are from
the Western Africa area. This system is a good tool to show the diversity and global dispersion.

As I said in my previous message, we are not releasing all the information that we have on the scammers to the general public. I.E the map only shows IP address / name and Geolocated address. That does not mean that, that is the only info we have on the said scammer.

For a really cool effect .... see the little Gold dude on the top left of the Zoom icon? (Premium member you see Laughing

) - (It does not work in central Africa) but click on the Gold dude and drag him down to your scammer. Look what happens.
