I was talking to a friend today who thinks the whole scambaiting thing is interesting as she narrowly missed being a victim herself and told her I wanted to start baiting artwork scammers. She asked how they are scamming if they actually do send artwork and my answer was 'uhhhh....' I hadn't thought of that.

So my question is, where is the scam involved in that particular situation? I haven't started it yet so maybe my question is naive or premature.

There aren't any actual "artwork scammers". Instead, the scammer sends out his normal scam letter, and the baiter normally sends a message along the lines of "I'm not interested in the deal you're proposing, however I would be interested in the following..."

The lad then sees another way of getting money out of the victim which he thinks will be easier to pull off. Most of the time they think they are now involved in a legitimate deal instead of a scam- in one of Shiver's baits, the guy uses his real passport for the deal with Shiver's art dealer, but a fake one for a standard victim. The important thing to them is getting the money.

Usually, they will contact a real artist to do the work for them, and pay them less than they expect to get out of the victim, making this a great way to waste a lot of their money when you don't pay up.

The only problem is most lads probably won't bite.

You keep the scammer busy and try to waste his time and resources, as in all baits here. Art baiting has IMO the same objective as any straight bait if the above are your main motives in baiting.
