Asking for a sample is common practice in art baiting, but gold is a fungible commodity,so it MIGHT be considered cash bating, which is a no-no.

Also, as a word of advice, asking for a sample of gold is a bad idea because, unlike art baiting, there is basically no way the lad is ever going to be able to send you the sample, so he will drop you.

He's a scammer. He doesn't own any gold dust, no more than the scammer who claims he has millions of dollars actually owns millions of dollars. He's telling a lie to provide a background story for demanding money from you.

If he did continue you with you, and did agree to send one ounce of gold dust, it would just be another lie - to persuade you to send him some money for it, maybe for shipping.

Perhaps your lad, though, wasn't smart enough to think of that. I don't think that a smart one would have dropped you for it. Smart ones tend to have an answer for everything.

I don't want to guess the number - But, lad, isn't that the best fun to be had with MoneyGram reference numbers?
