I just got a mail in my catcher account:

I got this as well. Responded with details + an encrypted password (*******) with the decryption key to follow when they reply. You can never be too careful!

Hi!! I have a Gmail acct, I got your e-mail, but I am still quite confused as to why I need to send this information. Did I do something wrong? Do I have a computer virus? Also need to know if you need some kind of payment to send you. I don't want to lose my Gmail account as to I don't have any friends except a few people that I e-mail. If I lose my e-mail account I will not have anymore freinds and I will be lonely.

It happens. This is how scammers run the "help me, I was mugged in [foreign city] and am stranded; please send money" scam. They send their emails to everybody in the contacts list after they get the victim's password.

I've gotten several of those myself the past few days. I just delete them. I don't think it's worth baiting. It's either phishing or the scam to get my email password and contact family and friends for money because I'm *stranded* (as another poster pointed out).

I don't think it's baitable, and it's not 419. But that's me.

I wouldn't waste my time with it. I'd just turn it into Google and let them deal with it.

I'd generally agree with this, because it's like a very, very tame hitman scam. What can you do? Be submissive and all "Oh no, I'll pay you anything, just don't delete my precious Gmail!" The threat is simply not big enough to warrant a believable "scared victim" bait.

I never thought it would get anywhere either, but filling out 3 small sections and chucking in a couple of *'s for good measure seemed like a reasonable time investment.

It's not a scam Email per se. It's a phishing attempt and it works better than you think unfortunately.

People have baited these before but they don't last long. Many put ****** for their PW. You'll get a "pls that is not acceptable write out ur PW not like ****** ok" response.

It might be a phishing scam that is baitable. Load up the contact list of a gmail account with baiters and then sacrifice the account to the phisher lad.

It may not go too far most of these "robbed and stranded in London" baits rarily last more than a few emails.

I just got the same thing in my Hotmail account. Obviously this password scam does work, since it was sent to me from a hijacked Hotmail acct. Rolling Eyes

The IP is Nigeria, but I didn't bother trying to bait it. I replied the same way puckettgw did.
