I recently posted a camera on Craigslist and have received a few requests from scammers to ship the item to Nigeria (sometimes they reveal this right away, sometimes not until later on in the conversation). They send a fake PayPal payment email to "confirm" payment and then ask for the postal tracking number.

Any ideas for how to take these scammers on a little run? The stakes aren't too high (camera is worth a few hundred dollars) but I think it could be fun.

I say give them a trumped-up tracking number and then insist it is correct when they say it didn't work. When it still doesn't work, suggest some alternate form of payment or shipping, then you can bury them in fake forms - there are some truly priceless ones to be found on this forum.

Hi krez,

As these scammers are presumably writing to your real email address, please drop them. You do not want to have any connection between your real identity and your baiting.

If you set up a separate baiting email address, using a false name and fake details, then you can reply to any further scam mails you receive from there - pretending that it is a totally different 'item' that you are selling.

For fake tracking numbers, there are a couple of options available for Premium Members only, including this:

Or you might like to try this:

I don't want to guess the number - But, lad, isn't that the best fun to be had with MoneyGram reference numbers?
