Hello guys,
I need advice on this.

I stayed in a rented property in peterborough in the UK for 3 years. ( 2007 to date) Before i moved in, i paid a deposit of £750

6 months later the landlord called me to say the letting agency had folded up and from now on he will be collecting the rent, and he transfred me to his own company ( apparently he also worked for another letting agency )

When i moved out 2 months ago, and when i asked the landlord for the deposit, he said he was swindled by the old letting agency and never got the money.

By UK law i can make a court claim against him, and he will be authorized to pay three times the amount. I told him, but he says he never got the deposit and not willing to pay me anything and gave a few flimpsy excuses about one or two things like the bathroom paint, door that was spoilt while i was there.

PROBLEM
If i make a court claim, it would cost me £75 ( I believe ) but the courts in peterborough, where i used to live, before moving to london. DONT ENFORCE IT.

What do i do ?

thanks
E

Hi afrika,

Sorry to hear of your problems, but here on Eater we deal solely with email scams, and not with real-life legal issues.

My suggestion to you, therefore, is to make an appointment with your local Citizen's Advice Bureau for some free advice, and/or consult a solicitor who will be able to tell you more about the law regarding this situation.

Good wishes in resolving the matter.

Hello Afrika

Branwen is correct on all counts. Simply contact a solicitor for professional advice. Hopefully a lawyers letter will have your ex landlord reaching for his chq book.

Goodluck
