I am a gay man. I met "Sgt. Roy James" on poz.com website. We've been chatting online now for almost a month. He said he was stationed in Afghanistan. He sent pictures of himself there, just like he did with other people here on this forum. I actually asked him if there was something I could send him in a care package and he requested an iPod, video game and white t-shirts. But at his insistence, I sent it to the agent in Ghana since he assured me the package would get here faster that way and he wanted it before Christmas.

This man is very good at playing with your emotions. I became very suspicous though when after the package arrived in Ghana, they wanted $500 to get it out of customs. Obviously I did not comply. I have asked customs in Ghana to return the package to me. Who knows if that will happen.

I feel lucky that I have possibly lost only about $400 worth of items I sent and no money. But they have my main email address now. I'm worried what they can do when they find out I've caught on to them. And who's pictures are they sending out?

While there isn't a huge chance he'll do anything nasty, these guys are career criminals. And they have your details. Once they twig that you are no longer going to have anything to do with them, they'll usually move on to what they see as the next paycheck!

It's not an Afghan IP. It was sent from a blackberry, and the IP traces to Research in Motion, the company that makes the blackberry.

If your gut tells you to be suspicious, you should trust it. You can also post the first couple of emails and we can probably tell you for sure.

I got as far as the 4th line before I knew for certain it was a scam. Even if the English weren't atrocious, I recognized that line as part of a script that has been used several times in the past.
