I used to do romance scam baiting myself - with some minor successes. Unfortunately, I had to give it up when I acquired a full time partner and 2 children - now there are not enough hours in the day! I still tinker with a couple of hangers on I've got in a quiet moment.

I was recently able to reunite my partner with his sister - they had been estranged for some years. When we met for the first time a couple of weeks back she started telling me about her online lover "David". He is french canadian and currently working in Ghana. He is divorced after his wife cheated on him (you getting the picture yet). His money is tied up in gold and he is thinking of starting a jewellery business in the UK. My BiL heard him on the phone and felt he was definitely not a caucasion french canadian (the pics he has sent show exactly this). I may be completely overreacting, but this is defo the profile I have seen before.

My SiL is about to come into a lump sum for her 60th birthday. I am petrified that this is going to disappear down the WU black hole. My BiL's wife has expressed her reservations, but SiL will not listen - indeed, they fell out. She is very forceful but extremely unworldly.

How do I persuade her that this man is only after her money and of whom he really is?
And if I can (surreptitiously of course) obtain his email address (or phone no if poss) is there some kind soul out there who would take him on and provide me with some tangible evidence that this man is not who he says he is? Whilst I am capable of taking him on myself, I think with my obvious emotional involvement it is entirely the wrong thing to do. I don't want her ever to speak to this guy again.

Many thanks.

You'll have to go to the other side (scamwarners.com) Wink

Where more experienced people can help you to do the right thing. They have dealt with this situation many times and can give you good advice.

It's not going to be easy!

If you need any help collecting facts/evidence we're all willing to help, drop us a PM then.

Good luck

Hello Cathy,

I'm sorry to hear that your partner's sister has got involved with a romance scammer.

The best place you can receive help is at our sister site, ScamWarners. If you register there also, you can repeat your concern for this situation in the 'Help! Is this a scam?' forum here, and the Support Team will be able to give you advice, and assist you in finding further evidence that this man is a scammer.

Your sister-in-law may also be helped by reading 'Are you falling for a love scammer?' here. I hope that you are able to help her discover the truth.

I don't want to guess the number - But, lad, isn't that the best fun to be had with MoneyGram reference numbers?

Thank you both.

I'll register with scamwarners asap.

I'm hopefully going to visit her at the weekend and with a bit of luck obtain his details (she is not very computer savvy, so I reckon if I offer to secure her network for her, I can get stuff off there which will help). Once I have his details, I'll be in contact. Thank you very much.

Hi Cathy, I thought the user name looked familiar, I am glad to see you back, I just wish it were under better circumstances.

As has been mentioned already, Scamwarners is the place to go but please dont wait, start the ball rolling now by getting signed up and perhaps the information you can provide will be enough to get some information together for when you see her.

This is not an easy path, but it is one that needs to be taken, good luck

Thanks Murry.

All signed up with scamwarners now. As much detail as I have I have posted.

I am going to get as much info as I can at the weekend. Once I know my SiL is safe and no longer in contact with this horrid little man, I am wishing for open season - perhaps a safari to a shark infested swamp.

(Can you see why I won't bait him - too emotionally involved with this one!!!)
