I caught this mail today and was baffled. I couldn't get full headers from FireFox as it was BCC'ed to me. But here is all I can give you in way of headers.

Good day,

I am Mrs. Cynthia Mershark, I am a US citizen, 48 years Old. I am one of
those that took part in the Compensation in Nigeria many years ago and they
refused to pay me, I had paid over $20,000 while in the US, trying to get my
payment all to no avail. So I decided to travel down to Nigeria with all my
compensation documents, and I was directed to meet Mr. Michael Craig, who is a
member of COMPENSATION AWARD COMMITTEE, and I contacted him and he explained
everything to me. He said whoever is contacting us through emails are fake. He
took me to the paying bank for the claim of my Compensation payment.

Right now I am the happiest woman on earth because I have received my
compensation funds of $1,500,000.00 Moreover, Mr. Michael Craig, showed me the
full information of those that are yet to receive their payments and I saw
your name as one of the beneficiaries, and your email address, that is why I
decided to email you to stop dealing with those people, they are not with your
fund, they are only making money out of you.

I will advise you to contact Mr. Michael Craig directly through the below

Name: Mr. Michael Craig
E-mail: [email protected]
Phone: +234-812-328-4157

You really have to stop dealing with those people that are contacting you and
telling you that your fund is with them, it is not in anyway with them, they
are only taking advantage of you and they will dry you up until you have
nothing. The only money I paid after I met Mr. Michael Craig was just $420 for
the paper works, take note of that.

Thank You and Be Blessed.

Cynthia Mershark.

Looks like a scammer trying to lure away victims from other scammers (plus get a few new ones who can't resist the promise of money).
No honour amongst thieves anymore. Heh.

Whoever said you can't touch happiness has never petted a dog.

Hi Detox,

As Bankster says, the scammer who sent this mail is hoping that this will be received by the victim of another scammer, and that victim will be lured away.

It's not a new type of scam, but it is a particularly nasty one, as it is aimed at people who have already lost money to scammers, and who may be quite desperate to cover that loss and get their financial situation sorted out again. From the scammer's point of view, a person who has already believed a scam, and has also paid money to scammers, is a much easier target than someone who might turn out to be more suspicious, or reluctant to send money to strangers.

Compensation Scams can be fun to bait, because your character can tell the Lad in the first email about how much s/he has already paid out, trying to get the fund delievered - and the Lad immediately knows that this is a 'paying victim' who will send money - and can be quite patient and persistent, wanting to have some of that money coming his way too. You can also pretend that your character is still in contact with the original scammer, and use that as a lever to get the Compensation Lad to do things your way, eg 'Barrister Johnson never insists of phone calls' or 'Barrister Johnson says you are a fraudstar because only fraudstars tell you send money by Western Union, and won't let you make a bank transfer.'

Or, of course, you can forward this email to one of the Lads you are already baiting and ask him if this is true. You could spend a couple of weeks discussing this, which is a nice delay in the bait, and takes the Lad away from his script and his plans.

It is your first time to use western union so therefore none can blame you. It is always like this at the first experience. - Yes lad, and at the second, and the third... you'll see.

I don't want to guess the number - But, lad, isn't that the best fun to be had with MoneyGram reference numbers?
