Sometimes the little drop down menu at the top right corner of an email has an item that reads "Report phishing", like so:
With other emails, this menu item reads "Report not phishing", like so:
Why does this change? I have looked at a bunch of emails and I can't detect any pattern that explains why this menu item would be displayed one way or the other. Can somebody educate me? |

Googlemail has already decided that it is a phishing mail, based on what ever criteria they use, mostly the ones that appear in your spam folder, with a red banner at the top, (googlemail has spotted the spoofed email address and different return address) are ones which come with 'report not phishing' message.
Well, that's what I think anyway. |

Similar to their spam filter, google has a phishing filter. When a Gmail user reports an email as being a phishing attempt, Gmail crawls the email and its headers. It uses some or all of the email's information to match toward future emails with similar content. Once the content is matched to some extent (such as 80%), Gmail labels the message as a phishing attempt and marks it with red warning tape at the top of the message.
If a message has been marked as a phishing email, you will have the option of marking it as not being a phishing attempt with the separate option in the drop-down menu. |
