I just completely eradicated Windows from my laptop.
I am now 100% open-source.

Christmas is awkward enough as it is at the Scissorkick house...
Now that my mom knows I don't have Microsoft Office, there will likely be a confrontation regardless. The last thing I need is to spoil a roast squirrel dinner with an ethics debate.

Yeah, I started by just experimenting with OpenOffice, but now I'm in a serious committed relationship with Lucid Lynx.

Years ago, I noticed that every usefull piece of software wouldn't work with the latest release of Windows as they had put in their own version that made the software incompatible.
I first encountered windows in the good old trusty Amiga.
And, BG has ripped off everything ever since!
I don't use a "Gates" browser and I do love my "Open Office".
As everybody I deal with is Windows orientated, how can I eradicate BG altogether?

I like to do "important" business in the closet as a way of finding inspiration. Sort of like my own personal mini-office with a lack of space though. But sitting under tables works too (as long as there is nothing gross underneath them).

I can recommend dual-booting as a way to try Ubuntu out. You have both it, and Windows on your PC and can choose which operating system you want to use every time you boot.

Download (1) now and read (2) while you wait for 1 to download. If you don't like it just wipe it completely.

It's nothing to be ashamed of sweetie. I've been that way myself for a few years now. Bit hair-raising at first, but you soon get used to it.

While your still arranging the cushions to your liking and choosing the new decor, give Linux Mint a whirl. It's lush. Wink

@music man: I'm in the vanilla category, but I could go full-blown any time. By pimped do you mean the 64 bit, or are there cool tricks that I can use to make my version even bad-assier? Besides the cool cellular mitosis screen saver.

@Fowan: Amen to what music man said. I dual booted for a while before I decided to let my "doesn't work well with others" side trump out all the windows users in my life. That and I didn't like cutting my hard drive in half and having to pick which OS to use every time I switched on. There's also a Live CD option, which allows you to experiment without committing.

@windy: Take it easy on me, I'm still new to the open thing. Is Mint as dumbed down as Ubuntu? Some of us are only trying to appear tech-savvy without having to think, etc.

Mint is based on Ubuntu but features a lot of non-free stuff like codecs etc. Like Mr SK said, try the live CDs for both and see how they work with all your hardware.

@MSK
I was thinking about stuff like Conky, themes, that sort of thing. I must admit that I have never tried the 64bit version. You hear of problems with certain apps and 64bit and I can do everything I want with the vanilla 32bit OS.

Spookily enough TheRegister offers a nice guide to picking your distro and dual-booting it.

Irish: No but I do occassionally find a dwarf and force them to act in a skit with me. I mean literally coming out of the closet for air and preventing further claustrophobia (Spelling?). I've already been out of that when I was 16. Laughing

I've found Mint seems to support just about every device I plug in to my desktop computer. Printer, wireless, Nvidia graphics card etc... The community regard themselves as one of the more friendly and helpful without getting too techy.

I have it on my little eeepc netbook too, and it runs like a dream. Very good power saving so I can easily get 6.5-7 hours continuous use if I dim the back light a bit.

The latest version Mint 9 lets you access over 30,000 free softwares. It's uber intuitive and fully customisable.

No need to go completely mad Open Office works well on Windows, MS Office Pro 1997 is now hostory here.

I was using Linux Mint 8, then upgraded to 9. I'm back to 8 as it is well refined and runs well on my box. I'll head back to 9 as soon as they get a few of the bugs worked out.
