Surreal is the point wherein the victim too becomes a scammer.
I normally offer little more than a muted scoff to people like sociologists and their kin, who write papers describing how the world works, without ever actually stepping out into it... but the more time I spend around victims of crime, and the more stories like this I read, the more I can see the possible legitimacy of the crime-as-a-disease model.
