Holy carp, I had no idea they did this. Touch your idle Yahoo baiting accounts now if there's anything there you want to save for later. Look what I just got on one account:

What does this mean?

* All messages sent to <baitername>@yahoo.com are being returned to the sender.
* You can still use your Yahoo! ID to access other registered services on Yahoo!.

Bastards. It was my first baiting char. I had some real gems in there.

Yeah Yahoo, Hushmail and some others tend to make it so that you have to log in at least 2 weeks or once a month. Which sucks because when you realise you have and account you haven't used, everything is deleted and you have to create another one. Hotmail did this thing where it didn't delete my account but deleted all my emails.

I guess they can do whatever they want with their servers. Yahoo does keep the account around too.

Thanks for the tip about the Hushmail. I wonder if Google would first send a warning to the alternate email you have to specify when you set up with their Gmail.

Yeah, it's a bummer. I log into all my yahoo accounts at least once a month just to keep them alive. I lost my first baiting account several years ago, including a boatload of emails. I'm still pissed over it.

Strange...I've had Yahoo accounts that were dormant for over 6 months!
Yahoo simply asked my secret question, then re-activated the account.

Gmail will keep your account for looong time. Only the login after a year of inactivity is a torture with a lot of captchas to answer, and it made me doubt - wrong passw ?
I did read in Help, after closing an account, the gmail-address will not be used again.
This means a lot of useless soludo399..@gmails on the graveyard.
