For the first time (for me anyway) I have seen e-mail providers go out and officially warn people about these scams. I got the following notice as part of a Windows Live Update mail this morning:
Watch out for lottery scams via e-mail
Spammers have sent out e-mails designed to make you believe that you have won a Microsoft Lottery. Delete this message at once if it comes to your inbox. It's a pure scam. In this artcicle you can read more about how to recognize a scam e-mail.

It is translated from my language by me so it might be different than what someone else got in English.
But the important thing here is that people are getting more and more aware of this, and that is of course a very good thing.
So what do you guys think? Do you see an end to these scams making money any time soon?

I doubt it. There are loads of warnings about Internet scams already. Yet the lads still find victims.

I suspect that's just Microsoft covering their butts legally as usual too.
I doubt they really care about online scammers, as long as no-one can possibly implicate them in it, hence they want to be seen to be warning people.
(Yeah, I know. Modern society has turned me cynical )
